Outboard motor including one or more of cowling, water pump, fuel vaporization suppression, and oil tank features
Embodiments of outboard motors and related systems and components thereof, as well as arrangements of marine vessels implementing same, as well as related methods of operation, use, assembly, and manufacture, and related improvements, are disclosed herein. In at least some embodiments, the outboard motor includes a cowling system in which at least one divider portion separates an interior region into first and second portion, with the transmission and engine respectively being situated in the first and second portions, respectively. Additionally, in at least some embodiments, the outboard motor includes a water pump system in which a water pump is integrated with the transmission. Further, in at least some embodiments, the outboard motor includes a fuel vaporization suppression feature, or an oil tank feature that allows for desirable oil drainage from the engine of the outboard motor particularly when the outboard motor is in particular (e.g., storage) positions.
EXHAUST SYSTEM
The present invention relates to an exhaust system for a combustion engine of a marine vessel. The exhaust system includes an exhaust system inlet configured to be coupled to an exhaust gas outlet of the marine engine, one or more exhaust system outlets, and an exhaust gas flow path extending from the inlet to the one or more exhaust system outlets and having a forward flow direction from the exhaust system inlet and a reverse flow direction extending from at least one of the one or more exhaust system outlets. The exhaust system further includes a flow redirection arrangement in the exhaust gas flow path for restricting a flow of liquid flowing in the reverse flow direction, the flow redirection arrangement comprising at least one flow redirection feature configured to redirect a first stream of the liquid toward the forward flow direction to collide with a second stream of the flow of liquid. The invention also relates to motor assemblies and marine vessels having such exhaust systems.
Outboard motor
An outboard motor that significantly reduces or prevents discoloration around an exhaust opening includes an engine, a drive shaft, a propeller shaft, a housing, an exhaust passage, a water intake passage, and a valve. The exhaust passage guides an exhaust gas from the engine toward the discharge chamber inside the housing. The water intake passage guides water, which enters an inside of the housing, to the discharge chamber when a forward propulsive force is generated. The valve regulates passage of the exhaust gas at the first opening due to water pressure when a forward propulsive force is generated. The valve permits the passage of exhaust gas at the first opening due to exhaust pressure when a backward propulsive force is generated.
Outboard motors having steerable lower gearcase
An outboard motor has a powerhead that causes rotation of a driveshaft, a steering housing located below the powerhead, wherein the driveshaft extends from the powerhead into the steering housing; and a lower gearcase located below the steering housing and supporting a propeller shaft that is coupled to the driveshaft so that rotation of the driveshaft causes rotation of the propeller shaft. The lower gearcase is steerable about a steering axis with respect to the steering housing and powerhead.
Propulsion system
A propulsion system has an internal combustion engine including an exhaust manifold and an engine air intake, an exhaust port fluidly connected to the exhaust manifold, a fresh air intake fluidly connected to the engine air intake and a filter assembly including adsorbent material and being configurable between a loading configuration allowing for filtration of at least some components of an exhaust gas of the engine, and a purging configuration allowing for removal therefrom of at least some of the components of the exhaust gas. In the loading configuration, the filter assembly is fluidly connected between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust port. In the purging configuration, the filter assembly is fluidly connected between the fresh air intake and the engine air intake. Above a threshold effective engine speed of the engine, the filter assembly is in the purging configuration. A method for treating exhaust gas is also described.
OUTBOARD MOTOR AND VESSEL
An outboard motor includes an engine, a fan, and a top cowl assembly. The fan suctions air around the engine and discharges the air through a discharge port. The top cowl assembly includes a top cowl to house the engine and the fan, and a cover to cover at least a portion of an outside of the top cowl. The top cowl assembly includes an exhaust port to communicate with the discharge port via an exhaust channel. At least a portion of the exhaust channel is defined by a surface of the top cowl and a surface of the cover.
BOAT PROPULSION DEVICE
An outboard motor includes an engine main body, and an intake device to supply air to the engine main body. The intake device includes a main intake pipe including a first intake pipe and a second intake pipe connected to a downstream end of the first intake pipe and extending at an angle with respect to an axial direction of the first intake pipe and through which the air supplied to the engine main body flows, and an extension pipe extending from a connection between the first intake pipe and the second intake pipe and including a resonance chamber therein. The extension pipe includes an extended peripheral wall and an end wall that closes the resonance chamber except for a portion adjacent to the main intake pipe.
Marine rudder exhaust system
The present disclosure is directed toward a marine exhaust system in which the marine exhaust is directed into the water via an exhaust system integrated within a marine rudder. Exhaust travels from the engine to the rudder via a pipe or tube and is expelled through a cavity in the rudder outward into the water. A swivel is located in the system to allow the rudder to rotate in normal steering operations to allow at least a portion of the exhaust pipe or tube to remain static.
MOVABLE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM FOR AUXILIARY DIESEL ENGINES
A mobile emissions control system is provided for diesel engines operated on ocean-going ships at-berth. The emissions control system comprises two essential elements: an emissions capturing system and an emissions control system. The emissions control system may be mounted on a towable chassis or mounted on a barge, allowing it to be placed alongside ocean-going ships at-berth. The emission capturing system captures exhaust from a ship's diesel engine and conducts it into the emissions control system, which cleans the exhaust and then passes clean air into the atmosphere through an exhaust outlet.
