Aerofoil and wings for air vehicles

Two element aerofoils are provided, having an aerofoil chord, a primary element having a first leading edge and a first trailing edge, a secondary element having a second leading edge and a second trailing edge, a gap between the primary element and the secondary element, and an axial overlap between the first trailing edge and the second leading edge. The secondary element is deflectable with respect to the primary element about a fixed hinge point by a flap deflection angle. The secondary element is configured to operate in airbrake mode when deflected by a respective the flap deflection angle corresponding to a design airbrake deflection angle wherein to generate an airbrake drag. In at least some examples, the axial overlap is numerically greater than 0.5% of the aerofoil chord, at least for the design airbrake deflection angle. Also disclosed are methods for operating air vehicles, and methods for designing two-element aerofoils.

Aerodynamic structures having lower surface spoilers

Aerodynamic structures having lower surface spoilers are described herein. One disclosed example apparatus includes a first spoiler of an aerodynamic structure of an aircraft, where the first spoiler is to deflect away from a first side of the aerodynamic structure and a second spoiler on a second side of the aerodynamic structure opposite of the first side, where the second spoiler is to deflect away from the second side to reduce a load on at least one of the first spoiler or a flap of the aerodynamic structure.

FLIGHT CONTROL MECHANISMS AND METHODS OF OPERATING AIRCRAFT WITH FLIGHT CONTROL MECHANISMS

Provided are flight control mechanisms, such as omnidirectional thrust mechanisms (OTMs), and methods of using such mechanisms. These mechanisms may be positioned in wings, tails, or other components of aircraft. A mechanism may comprise a center member and top and bottom panels. The center member may comprise two curved segments joint at a center edge. The top and bottom panels may be independently pivotable relative to the center member. At high speeds, the top panel and/or the bottom panel may be pivoted outward to change the lift, drag, roll, and/or other flight conditions. The mechanism may also include a gas nozzle to direct compressed gas to the center member. The center member and/or the top and bottom panels redirect this gas resulting in forces in one of four directions, which are used for controlling the aircraft at low speeds, down to hover.

Device for assisting the piloting in acceleration of an aircraft in taxiing in order to control its speed, related aircraft and method

A device is for assisting the piloting in acceleration of an aircraft in taking in order to control its speed. The comprises a control member, adapted to be actuated by a pilot from a neutral position to define a taxiing piloting command for controlling the speed of the aircraft and a central controller, adapted to operate pilot at least one engine of the aircraft to apply the taxiing command defined by the pilot. The taxiing piloting command is an acceleration or deceleration command of the aircraft during taxiing.

Device for controlling the speed of a spaceplane during the transition from a phase of space flight to a phase of aeronautical flight and associated transition method

A spaceplane suitable for aeronautical flight comprising a body and a wing defining a lower airfoil surface in addition to attitude control means that comprise one or a plurality of shutters disposed under the lower airfoil surface of same and maneuverable between a stowed position and an inclined extended position for aerodynamic braking during the transition from a phase of space flight to a phase of aeronautical flight of the aircraft.

A hydraulic actuator is adapted to drive a spoiler of a wing having a flap. When the hydraulic actuator drives the spoiler in an overlapping region where a driving range of the flap and a driving range of the spoiler overlap, an output suppressing structure suppress a drive output of the hydraulic actuator in the overlapping region to be less than that in a non-overlapping region other than the overlapping region.
