UAV CONFIGURATIONS AND BATTERY AUGMENTATION FOR UAV INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES, AND ASSOCIATED SYSTEMS AND METHODS
UAV configurations and battery augmentation for UAV internal combustion engines, and associated systems and methods are disclosed, A representative configuration includes a fuselage, first and second wings coupled to and pivotable relative to the fuselage, and a plurality of lift rotors carried by the fuselage. A representative battery augmentation arrangement includes a DC-powered motor, an electronic speed controller, and a genset subsystem coupled to the electronic speed controller. The genset subsystem can include a battery set, an alternator, and a motor-gen controller having a phase control circuit configurable to rectify multiphase AC output from the alternator to produce rectified DC feed to the DC-powered motor. The motor-gen controller is configurable to draw DC power from the battery set to produce the rectified DC feed.
ELECTRICAL VERTICAL TAKE-OFF AND LANDING AIRCRAFT
Electrically powered Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft are presented. Contemplated VTOL aircraft can include one or more electrical energy stores capable of delivering electrical power to one or more electric motors disposed within one or more propeller housings, where the motors can drive the propellers. The VTOL aircraft can also include one or more back-up and/or secondary energy/power sources (e.g., batteries, engines, generators, fuel-cells, semi-cells, etc.) capable of driving the motors should the energy stores fail or deplete. The VTOL aircraft will be significantly different to regular Tiltrotor aircraft as we use propellers and a modern steering system that reduces complicity dramatically. The contemplated configurations address safety, noise, and hover stability and outwash concerns to allow such designs to operate in built-up areas while retaining competitive performance relative to existing aircraft.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FOR AIRCRAFT
Systems and methods associated with electrical systems of aircraft are disclosed. A method disclosed herein comprises generating electricity using an electric generator operatively coupled to an engine of the aircraft, supplying the electricity generated using the electric generator to a baseline power bus; generating electricity using an electric starter generator operatively coupled to the engine; and supplying the electricity generated using the electric starter generator to a supplemental power bus independent from the baseline power bus.
HYBRID ELECTRIC TAXI SYSTEM (HETS) OR FULL ELECTRIC TAXI SYSTEM (FETS)
For aircraft taxiing, an aircraft is equipped with an electric machine installed in a propulsor gearbox (PGB), in parallel to the gas turbine, working in motor mode during taxi, and in generator mode during flight phases (such as take-off, climb, cruise, descent, approach and landing). Typical current systems which use an electric machine in the PGB do not use the electric machine in motor mode for taxi operations (i.e., it is only an additional generator). An optimized power supply providing a combination of a thermal engine such as an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) and an electric energy storage system such as a battery provides power to the PGB electric machine even when the gas turbine is off.
Electric Motor Having an Integrated Cooling system and Methods of Cooling an Electric Motor
The present disclosure pertains to electric machines such as electric propulsion systems for aircraft that integrated cooling systems, and methods of cooling such an electric machine. Exemplary electric machines include an electric motor that has a stator, a rotor, and a drive shaft operably coupled to the rotor. Exemplary electric machines further include a motor cooling conduit that defines a pathway for conveying a cooling fluid through or around at least a portion of the electric motor, a casing assembly that circumferentially surrounds at least a portion of the electric motor, a casing assembly conduit integrally formed within at least a portion of the casing assembly which defines a pathway for conveying the cooling fluid through the at least a portion of the casing assembly, and a pump or compressor operably coupled to the drive shaft and configured to circulate the cooling fluid through the motor cooling conduit and the casing assembly conduit.
Nacelle for an aircraft aft fan
An aircraft includes a fuselage extending between a forward end and an aft end. An aft engine is mounted to the aft end of the fuselage, the aft engine defining a centerline. The aft engine further includes a nacelle having a bottom section, the bottom section having a forward lip. The forward lip of the bottom section defines a camber line. The camber line, in turn, defines an angle relative to the centerline of the aft engine greater than or equal to at least about five degrees.
Aircraft having a versatile propulsion system
An aircraft having a vertical takeoff and landing fight mode and a forward flight mode. The aircraft includes an airframe and a versatile propulsion system attached to the airframe. The versatile propulsion system includes a plurality of propulsion assemblies. A flight control system is operable to independently control the propulsion assemblies. The propulsion assemblies are interchangeably attachable to the airframe such that the aircraft has a liquid fuel flight mode and an electric flight mode. In the liquid fuel flight mode, energy is provided to each of the propulsion assemblies from a liquid fuel. In the electric flight mode, energy is provided to each of the propulsion assemblies from an electric power source.
Parallel hybrid-electric aircraft engine
A parallel hybrid-electric aircraft engine that provides power for takeoff and climb by combining the output power of an electric motor with that an internal combustion engine and then converting the electric motor to a generator once the additional power of the electric motor is no longer needed.
Embedded electric machine
A gas turbine engine includes a compressor section and a turbine section together defining a core air flowpath. The rotary component is rotatable with the compressor section and the turbine section. The gas turbine engine additionally includes an electric machine rotatable with the rotary component and positioned coaxially with the rotary component at least partially inward of the core air flowpath. The electric machine is flexibly mounted to a static frame member, or flexibly coupled to the rotary component, or both, such that the electric machine is mechanically isolated or insulated from various internal and external forces on the gas turbine engine.
HYBRID ELECTRIC FAN WITH STALL FREE LOW PRESSURE COMPRESSOR
