A hybrid electric propulsion (HEP) system can include a heat engine torque sensor connected between a heat engine and a combining gear box to sense a heat motor input torque input to the combining gear box, an electric motor torque sensor connected between an electric motor and the combining gear box to sense an electric motor input torque input to the combining gear box, and a combining gear box torque sensor connected to an output of the combining gearbox. The system can include a HEP controller operatively connected to each of the heat engine torque sensor, the electric motor torque sensor, and the combining gear box torque sensor to receive one or more torque signals therefrom. The controller can be configured to output one or more output signals as a function of the signals from each of the heat engine torque sensor, the electric motor torque sensor, and the combining gear box torque sensor.

The method includes: receiving data indicative of a first engine operating parameter, a second engine operating parameter, or both; determining a first engine operating parameter margin, a second parameter operating margin, or both; determining a load share for the first engine, the second engine, or both, or between the first engine and the second engine based on the first engine operating parameter margin, the second engine operating parameter margin, or both; and transferring a first amount of power to or from the first electric machine and a second amount of power to or from the second electric machine in response to the determined load share.

An aircraft comprises a fuselage, first and second wing segments each having a leading edge and a trailing edge, a plurality of spokes coupling the fuselage to the first and second wing segments, one or more motors disposed within or attached to the plurality of spokes, and three or more propellers proximate to a leading edge of the plurality of spokes, distributed along the plurality of spokes, and operably connected to the motors to provide lift whenever the aircraft is in vertical takeoff and landing and stationary flight and provide thrust whenever the aircraft is in forward flight. When the aircraft is in vertical takeoff and landing and stationary flight, the fuselage is approximately vertical. When the aircraft is in forward flight, the fuselage is approximately in the direction of the forward flight and extends forward beyond the leading edges of the first wing segment and the second wing segment.

Processor(s) receive an order for a product from a customer. In response to determining that the customer is authorized to have the product delivered by the aerial drone, the processor(s) identify a weight, size, item type, and value of the product, and determine whether the aerial drone is physically able to lift and transport the product, based on a distance to the customer and a cost effectiveness of using the aerial drone over another mode of transportation. The aerial drone is coupled to the product and launched. In response to sensors on the aerial drone detecting a change in flight conditions while the aerial drone is flying to the customer, a drone on-board computer disengages an electric motor and engages an internal combustion on the aerial drone.

The hybrid drive system is configured to transfer the power from the shaft to the output of the second motor-generator.

Methods of utilizing an autorotative assist unit as well as retrofitting an autorotative assist unit to an existing helicopter are also disclosed. By employing an autorotative assist unit, improved autorotation can be achieved without the need to increase the weight of the rotor.
