Recovery of a final stage of a spacecraft launch vehicle

After deploying its payload, the final stage of a launch vehicle is maneuvered to couple the nosecone of the launch vehicle to the ‘rear’, or ‘engine-end’ of the final stage. The nosecone covers the engine of the final stage, to protect the engine and related components from the heat of re-entry and the impact of landing. Placing the nosecone over the engine and orienting the combination such that the nosecone ‘leads’ the final stage during re-entry, places the center of gravity of the combination ahead of the center of pressure in the direction of travel. Accordingly, the combination is inherently stable as it re-enters the atmosphere and falls to earth. Parachutes and directional devices are used to provide a controlled soft landing.

Clockable secondary payload bridges for a payload adapter

A secondary payload bridge for a payload adapter is disclosed and includes a body portion, plurality of payload ports, and a secondary payload port. The plurality of attachment points are connected to the body portion of the secondary payload bridge. The plurality of attachment points are configured to removably attach the secondary payload bridge to the payload adapter to allow for clockable positioning of the secondary payload bridge around a circumference of the payload adapter. The secondary payload port is connected to the body portion. The secondary payload port is configured to releasably attach to a corresponding secondary payload.

Controlled separation joint

A joint that is separable by detonating a detonating cord within an expanding tube. The joint is held together with a set of bolts. Each bolt is retained on one side of the joint with a lever. The expanding tube is retained under an arm of each lever. When the detonating cord is activated, the tube expands and exerts a force against an arm of each lever, thereby breaking the set of bolts, and allowing the joint to separate. In one example, the separable joint is used to retain a payload fairing on a launch vehicle so that the fairing can be jettisoned during flight.

REFUELING TOOL AND SYSTEM INCORPORATING THE REFUELING

The present disclosure relates to a robotically controlled satellite refueling tool and associated robotically controlled support and site preparation tools which facilitates on-orbit refueling by teleoperation of fill/drain valves of various designs and dimensions on satellites not originally prepared for on-orbit servicing, through the installation of quick connect safety valves, using vision-based feedback as well as feedback from sensors embedded in the refueling tool to operate a suite of adaptable and adjustable mechanisms. The refueling tool has an open architecture to allow a refueling tool vision system to see the fill/drain valve and the section of the refueling tool that is engaged with the fill/drain valve. The support tools include a blanket cutter tool, a blanket handler tool, a wire cutter tool, a gripper tool, and the site preparation tools include a B-nut removal tool and a crush seal removal tool. Each of these tools includes a common base structure which is interfaced to the end effector of the robotic arm for transmitting rotation and torque to the various tools.
