Opening configuration for shrink-wrapped package

Non-crosslinked polyolefin films or doped crosslinked polyolefin films (i.e., crosslinked polyolefin films that include a tear-alignment additive) may be used to shrink-wrap packages to create a wrapped package that is protected from tampering and damage but is also easy to open with little effort required by the customer. There is no need for perforations, and the films are quiet when torn, folded, cut, etc. Tear initiating cuts may be formed in the film. A tab may be placed over the film, and when the tab is pulled it applies enough force to start a pair of straight tears. The tears may be parallel or perpendicular to each other. The tears propagate in non-crosslinked polyolefin easily in the machine direction of the film as the tab continues to be pulled. In a doped crosslinked polyolefin, the tears propagate in the machine direction or perpendicular to the machine direction of the film.

EXPANDABLE SLIT-SHEET STOCK MATERIAL, DUNNAGE CONVERSION SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR EXPANDING
20210101356 · 2021-04-08 ·

An improved expandable slit-sheet stock material is configured to aid in temporarily restricting opening of a plurality of slits of the slit-sheet stock material, such as during winding of the unexpanded stock material or during expansion of the stock material. Each slit of the plurality of slits includes one or more un-slit reinforcement portions, such as reinforcement ties, extending fully between opposite longitudinal sides of the slit, and disposed between opposed transverse endpoints of the slit. The reinforcement ties minimize or prevent tearing of the stock material during the winding or expansion. A dunnage conversion system for expanding the slit-sheet stock material includes an expander having a pair of opposed rollers. The rollers engage the stock material to effect breaking of the un-slit reinforcement portions and expansion of the slit-sheet stock material.

Recyclable High Barrier Packaging Films and Methods of Making Same
20210122556 · 2021-04-29 · ·

A high barrier packaging film has an outer layer of a high molecular polymer or a spunbond nonwoven fabric comprising a high molecular polymer, a passive barrier layer of the same high molecular polymer with nanoparticles of bentonite clay dispersed therein, an active barrier layer of the same high molecular polymer with desiccant particles dispersed therein, and a lamination layer of the same high molecular polymer. The outer layer, passive barrier layer and active barrier layer are compound laminated with the lamination layer to form the high barrier packaging film. Because the layers are all formed of a same polymer, such as polyethylene, and because there are no metal components in the layers used to create the film, the high barrier packaging film is readily recyclable.
