A method, and milking system, for managing a herd of dairy animals including N groups, wherein N2, and the method includes: A) determining a content of a substance in the milk for a group of dairy animals, and B) performing an animal-related operation for the group, based on the content of the determined substance.

Detection of mastitis using comparison of ORP

Determining the quality of milk due to the presence of mastitis by monitoring the oxidation reduction potential (ORP) of the raw (unpasteurized) milk. The ORP of the milk is tested by a sensor placed into the milk soon after having been removed from the animal (e.g., cow) and prior to the milk being combined in a bulk tank with milk from other animals. The sensor can be positioned in the line carrying the milk from the cow, allowing real-time testing of the milk. Each mammary gland (e.g., quarter) is tested separately, and the ORP levels are compared. Any gland (e.g., quarter) having a level that deviates from the other levels by a predetermined amount is considered suspect for mastitis.

MILKING SYSTEM

A milking system for milking a dairy animal includes a milking cup and a measuring chamber which is in flow communication with the milking cup for the obtained milk where the chamber has a sensor system for measuring at least one property of the milk. The sensor system includes at least three optical sensor devices, each configured to measure values of a property of the milk, and a sensor control unit for actuating the sensor system and for processing the measured values. The sensor control unit is configured to repeatedly select one of the sensor devices. Two of the optical sensor devices are identical, and the sensor system is configured to in each case measure the local value of the property of the milk and to determine a value of the at least one property of the milk in the measuring chamber on the basis of the values measured locally.

Milking system with detection system

A milking system includes a milking device, a milk line, and a sampling and analysis device for the milk that includes a control unit, a tape mover to move and unwind a tape wound on a tape reel and with a base material with reagent pads, that detect a substance in the sample, and a dosing device to provide the sample onto a reagent pad, and a sensor to detect radiation from said reagent pad, and to analyse the detected radiation to indicate a presence or concentration of said substance. The reagent pad is facing downward during provision of the sample. In this way, the chance of excess liquid falling from the reagent, and possibly onto a camera, is reduced. Smaller reagent pads may be used, it reduces the chance of supplied liquid spilling over to a neighbouring reagent pad, the measures preventing this spilling may be limited, and it is easier to suck away excess fluid.

Milking system with detection system

A milking system includes a milking device with a milking control, a milk line, and a sampling/analysis device. The milking control controls the milking based on said analysis. The sampling/analysis device includes a reagent carrier, including a tape with a first side with a reagent pad that detects the presence of a substance in the milk sample and a second side, a dosing device to provide a droplet of said sample onto the reagent pad, a source for emitting source radiation onto the reagent pad, and a sensor to detect response radiation emitted by the reagent pad, and to analyse the detected response radiation to indicate the presence or concentration of said substance. The first side faces away from the sensor during analysing by the sensor. By viewing from below, the observed reaction in the reagent is cleaner, and suffers less from artefacts, and the camera will stay cleaner.

The dosing device includes a nozzle with a supply line, a pump for pumping liquid to the nozzle, a flat wall part, and a mover to press the flat wall part and the nozzle against each other to close the nozzle. In this way, the nozzle can be filled completely to a known level and without bubbles. Thereafter, the sample pump can provide a sample droplet with known volume, which enables better control over the sample supply process.

Measuring cell and assembly having at least one measuring cell for measuring the conductivity and/or impedance of milk during a milking process

A milk measuring cell having an inlet channel and an outlet, a cavity, a barrier which protrudes from a bottom of the cavity and divides the cavity into a measurement trough (13) on the side of the inlet channel and an outlet channel on the side of the outlet, wherein a peak of the barrier is positioned below an elevation of the inlet channel.

Cassette for biomarker analysis of a milk sample

A cassette (130) configured to enable measurement of at least one biomarker value of a milk sample of an animal (100). The cassette (130) includes a tape distributing spool (131); a tape (170) with a plurality of dry sticks (180a, 180b, 180c), configured to indicate the biomarker value of the milk sample, and a top film (310) arranged to protect the dry sticks (180a, 180b, 180c) while rolled up on the tape distributing spool (131); a tape collecting spool (132), configured to collect used dry sticks (180a, 180b, 180c); and a top film reel (330), arranged to peel off and collect the top film (310) of the tape (170).

Milking box with robotic attacher

A method includes positioning a robotic attacher under a dairy livestock located in a milking stall, wherein the robotic attacher comprises a nozzle. The method continues by rotating the robotic attacher such that the nozzle is positioned generally on the top of the robotic attacher and performing a spraying operation using the nozzle. The method concludes by retracting the robotic attacher from under the dairy livestock.
