A linear motor/generator/transmission system includes a guideway with rails and a plurality of stator cores and coils evenly disposed along the length and in the center of the guideway. The system also includes a carriage configured to travel along the guideway having at least two magnet bars with alternating pole magnets, each successive magnet of each magnet bar mounted in front of the other in a direction of travel of the carriage. In embodiments, the magnet bars are mounted parallel to and on either side of a longitudinal centerline of the carriage such that, when adjacent to the center line and each other, the at least two magnet bars are positioned over the stator coils and are configured to be slidably translated away from the center line of the carriage to a position where the at least two magnet bars are not over the stator coils.

An automated storage and retrieval system includes remotely operated vehicles, a main grid in which the vehicles operates, a service grid for placement of vehicles for service, and a control system for controlling the vehicles. The control system includes a data record for the status of a vehicle state for each vehicle. Each remotely operated vehicle includes a label and the service grid includes a reader for reading the label so as to identify each vehicle passing the reader. The control system receives a signal from the reader and, upon receipt, compares the data record with an observed vehicle state of the identified vehicle and either updates the data record with the observed vehicle state or indicates to an operator that a difference exists between the observed vehicle state and the vehicle state on the control system.

An article conveyance apparatus couples a plurality of conveyor carriages for conveying articles and enables the coupled conveyor carriages to travel along a conveyance path K. The conveyor carriage is coupled by a coupling part to another conveyor carriage placed in the longitudinal direction with respect to a traveling direction H of the conveyor carriage. The conveyor carriage includes a load cell that is provided in the coupling part and measures a force applied between the conveyor carriages, and a controller that calculates a force F applied to wheels of the conveyor carriage, based on a tension T between the conveyor carriages calculated according to the force applied between the conveyor carriages and measured by the load cell.
