System and method for picking single sheet of material for further processing

A single material sheet is picked from a support member. A gripping member is aligned above the support member, where the gripping member includes a pair of spaced apart pinching members movably coupled with a main frame, and each pinching member includes an exposed gripping surface that is substantially planar and that faces an exposed surface of the material sheet. The gripping member is moved a first distance toward the exposed surface of the material sheet such that the gripping surfaces of the pinching members engage a portion of the material sheet. The pinching members for the gripping member are moved toward each other while the pinching members engage the portion of the material sheet so as to pinch the portion of the material sheet between the pinching members and vertically displace the material sheet from the support member.

The airflow can interact with the material to produce flutter, which assists in separating lower layers from the uppermost layer. A material gripper can grip the uppermost or top layer of material for removal from the stack and repositioning in a work area.

A method for gripping, moving and releasing a piece of cloth with a gripper that is initially placed with opposed, movable, coherent, flexible surface parts in contact with the piece of cloth, and the surface parts are moved with respect to each other and with respect to the gripper in a gripping action, in order to pinch and hold on to the piece of cloth. The gripper with the piece of cloth pinched between the surface parts is moved to a different location, wherein the surface parts move in a reverse direction in order to release the piece of cloth. While in contact with the piece of cloth, the opposed surface parts are moved along a path which brings the surface parts both closer to each other and moves them in a direction away from the piece of cloth.

A system for placing a composite ply includes a transfer end effector that is movable relative to a carrier transfer device, configured to convey a ply carrier that supports the composite ply, and a placement end effector that is movable relative to the transfer end effector and to a forming tool. The transfer end effector is configured to remove the ply carrier, supporting the composite ply, from the carrier transfer device and to position the ply carrier for removal by the placement end effector. The placement end effector is configured to remove the ply carrier from the transfer end effector and to apply the composite ply to the forming tool.

The sensor may be coupled with the body. The clamp may be in communication with the sensor and coupled with the body. The clamp having an engaged mode where the clamp is pressed against a portion of the drum and a disengaged where the clamp is not pressed against a portion of the drum, the clamp transitions from the engaged mode to the disengaged mode based on a signal from the sensor.
