Adaptive sheet caliper control system and apparatus and methods
The present invention provides an adaptive control system to control a plant using direct output feedback in which a function of the full plant state, as opposed to estimates thereof, is used for feedback control of the plant. The adaptive control system of this invention is therefore highly useful in the control of plants, particularly plants for controlling the physical properties of rolls of web material and more particularly a calendering apparatus. Accordingly, in a particularly preferred embodiment the adaptive control system of this invention controls loading of a calender apparatus, such as a pair of opposed rolls forming a calendering stack, based upon the physical properties of a previously processed web.

Contact Roll
The invention describes contact rolls for pressing at least one web of material, preferably a web of plastic film, against at least one rotating winding device, the contact roll comprising a surface layer.
At least two segments are provided which are spaced axially apart and which extend around, in which segments the quality of the surface layer differs from the quality of the other areas of the surface layer, at least some portions of said segments being in contact with the edges of the at least one web of material.
MACHINE AND METHOD FOR THE WINDING OF STRIPS OF WEB MATERIAL WITH MEANS FOR TRANSVERSAL CUTTING OF THE STRIPS AND ANCHORING OF THE STRIPS TO THE WINDING CORE
The machine (1) comprises an unwinding section (3) for unwinding parent reels (Ba, Bb) of web material (N), an unwinding section (3) for unwinding parent reels (Ba, Bb) of web material (Na, Nb), and at least one winding station (15). The winding station in turn comprises a winding device (41, 51), to which a longitudinal strip (S) of web material is fed. In the winding station, a respective spool (B) of web material is formed. The winding station (15) further comprises: a cutting device (81, 83) for the longitudinal strip (S), to cut the longitudinal strip (S) transversally, thus forming a tail edge, which remains on the spool (B) under formation, and a leading edge; and a holding device (85) for holding the leading edge of the longitudinal strip (S), to transfer the leading edge onto a tubular winding core (T) of a new spool to be wound.
Roll of flexible glass and method for rolling
A roll (10) of glass ribbon (20), having a thickness of 0.3 mm or less, wherein a thickness compliant material interlayer (40) is wound together with the glass ribbon. The characteristics of the interlayer are chosen to form the roll with minimal lateral offset (9). For example, the static coefficient of friction between the interlayer and the glass ribbon may be greater than or equal to 3.0 (as measured with a vertical force of 0.5 N). Other characteristics may include the width, thickness, and compliance, of the interlayer. There is also disclosed a method of rolling a glass ribbon wherein the roll winding parameters, for example web tension and pressure between the layers of the roll, are chosen to minimize the lateral offset.
Roll of flexible glass and method for rolling
A roll (10) of glass ribbon (20), having a thickness of 0.3 mm or less, wherein a thickness compliant material interlayer (40) is wound together with the glass ribbon. The characteristics of the interlayer are chosen to form the roll with minimal lateral offset (9). For example, the static coefficient of friction between the interlayer and the glass ribbon may be greater than or equal to 3.0 (as measured with a vertical force of 0.5 N). Other characteristics may include the width, thickness, and compliance, of the interlayer. There is also disclosed a method of rolling a glass ribbon wherein the roll winding parameters, for example web tension and pressure between the layers of the roll, are chosen to minimize the lateral offset.
METHOD FOR ADAPTING AT LEAST ONE WINDING PARAMETER OF A WINDING DEVICE
The invention relates to a method for adapting at least one winding parameter of a winding device during winding of a film web on a winding core, having the following steps:—conveying of the film web along a measuring path between a first driven roll and a second driven roll—increasing of the web tension of the film web between the first roll and the second roll—continuous detecting of the drive parameters of the first roll and of the second roll at least in the form of the torque and the circumferential speed,—determining of a stress-strain diagram from the detected drive parameters—adapting of at least one winding parameter of the winding device on the basis of the determined stress-strain diagram in order to achieve a defined elongation of the film web during winding on the winding core.
METHOD FOR ADAPTING AT LEAST ONE WINDING PARAMETER OF A WINDING DEVICE
The invention relates to a method for adapting at least one winding parameter of a winding device during winding of a film web on a winding core, having the following steps:—conveying of the film web along a measuring path between a first driven roll and a second driven roll—increasing of the web tension of the film web between the first roll and the second roll—continuous detecting of the drive parameters of the first roll and of the second roll at least in the form of the torque and the circumferential speed,—determining of a stress-strain diagram from the detected drive parameters—adapting of at least one winding parameter of the winding device on the basis of the determined stress-strain diagram in order to achieve a defined elongation of the film web during winding on the winding core.
