A tape cartridge is detachably installed in a tape printing apparatus on a cartridge installation portion that has a platen driving shaft. The tape cartridge includes a platen roller in which the platen driving shaft is inserted, an outer peripheral surface which is provided parallel with a cartridge installing direction and on an outer shell of the tape cartridge, a pair of projections formed on opposite sides of the outer peripheral surface, and a recessed portion provided on the outer peripheral surface. When seen from the attaching direction of the tape cartridge, the recessed portion is disposed on an opposite side with respect to the platen roller over an imaginary line connecting the pair of projections and disposed at a position to which one of the pair of projections farther from the platen roller is closer than the other of the pair of projections.

A ribbon rewinding mechanism for providing stable ribbon tension in a printer includes a base body, a supply shaft assembly, a take-up shaft assembly and a transmission system. Each of the supply shaft assembly and the take-up shaft assembly has an axis rod, an outer cover and an elastic member. The outer cover and the axis rod drive each other through the elastic member. The outer covers of the supply shaft assembly and the take-up shaft assembly are connectable to the two ends of a ribbon, respectively. The axis rods of the supply shaft assembly and the take-up shaft assembly are connected to the base body and the transmission system through unidirectional transmission elements, respectively, so that the ribbon can be stably and continuously rewound for a distance needed.

The transport device includes a tensile force applying unit that has a tension bar as an example of a tensile force applying member that is biased toward a medium between the transport mechanism and the winding unit and applies tensile force to the medium. Furthermore, the transport device includes a control unit that independently and intermittently drives the transport mechanism and the winding unit. The control unit controls transport start timing of the winding unit to take place later than transport start timing of the transport mechanism and causes the transport mechanism and the winding unit to transport the medium in parallel.

The control unit is configured to acquire a first current profile based on the reference current when the medium is transported in a first transport speed mode, and to generate a second current profile based on the first current profile.

The roller-to-roller conveyance control apparatus includes an amplitude target setting unit that sets an amplitude target value of the tension deviation; an adjustment execution command generation unit that provides a command to adjust the control gain; an adjustment manipulated-variable output unit that outputs an adjustment manipulated variable; a manipulated-variable amplitude determination unit that increases the amplitude of the adjustment manipulated variable until the amplitude of the tension deviation becomes larger than the amplitude target value; and a control-gain calculation device that calculates the control gain from the amplitude and the vibration period of the tension deviation. A tension-shaft speed controller controls a tension-control-shaft motor on the basis of the line speed reference and the adjustment manipulated variable during the adjustment of the control gain.

In this case, it is preferable that the control portion increase the torque limit value in a case in which the detected rotation speed falls below a first threshold value, and that the control portion reduce the torque limit value in a case in which the detected rotation speed exceeds a second threshold value, which is larger than the first threshold value.

A tensioner (12) to vary the tension in a portion (14) of the web (6) of media (8) is also provided. The portion (14) is a portion of web which is being rolled onto the winding roller (10). Also provided is controller (16) to control the tensioner (12) to vary the tension based on the time taken for the printed printing liquid on the web (6) of media (8) to dry.

A tensioning control device having a first motor that applies a torque to a first end of a substrate in a first direction and a second motor that applies a torque to a second end of the substrate in a second direction that is generally opposite the first direction is disclosed. In this manner, the first motor and the second motor apply torque to the substrate in opposing directions, thereby placing the substrate in tension. In one embodiment, the first motor applies a torque to the first end of the substrate that is equal to the torque applied to the second end of the substrate by the second motor. By placing the substrate in tension in this manner, an actuator is able to incrementally move the substrate in a forward direction and a backward direction independent of the tension applied to the substrate.
