In an example, a method may include determining a range of motion of a pick arm during lifting of the pick arm from a media stack position to a hard stop position in an image forming apparatus. The pick arm may have a pick roller at one end for picking a media sheet from a media stack and pivotally mounted at an opposite end to enable angular movement of the pick arm relative to the media stack. Further, the method may include estimating a height of the media stack based on the determined range of motion of the pick arm from the media stack position to the hard stop position. Furthermore, the method may include indicating an amount of media sheets remaining in the media stack corresponding to the estimated height.

An image forming apparatus configured to form images on both sides of a sheet, includes an image forming unit, which is configured to form an image on an image bearing member, and a sheet conveying device, which is configured to move the sheet being conveyed toward a width direction, which is orthogonal to a conveyance direction. After the formed image is transferred onto a first surface of the sheet, the image forming apparatus inverts and conveys the sheet to transfer an image onto a second surface. Moreover, a side edge position of the sheet in the width direction is detected during conveyance for the transferring onto each of the first surface and the second surface, and an image writing start position for the image forming unit is determined based on a result of the detection to store a result of the determination in a memory.

An image forming apparatus configured to form images on both sides of a sheet, includes an image forming unit, which is configured to form an image on an image bearing member, and a sheet conveying device, which is configured to move the sheet being conveyed toward a width direction, which is orthogonal to a conveyance direction. After the formed image is transferred onto a first surface of the sheet, the image forming apparatus inverts and conveys the sheet to transfer an image onto a second surface. An example method comprises operating a drive unit to advance a substrate in a substrate advance direction toward a printing station. At the printing station, a first line is printed onto the substrate. A drive unit is instructed to advance the substrate in the substrate advance direction by a target amount, and a second line is printed onto the substrate. The distance between the first and second lines in a direction perpendicular to the substrate advance direction is calculated and, based on the calculated difference, a tension of the substrate is modified.
PAPER SHEET HANDLING APPARATUS
A paper sheet handling apparatus has a pickup roller, a stage, a pressure sensor, and a measuring unit. For each feeding process, in which the pickup roller feeds paper sheets until the pressure detected by the pressure sensor becomes less than a predetermined set value, the stage presses paper sheets against the pickup roller until the pressure detected by the pressure sensor reaches another set value. The pickup roller operates at a feeding speed of a first speed if a calculated feeding value is less than a threshold, and operates at a feeding speed of a second speed that is slower than the first speed if the calculated feeding value is equal to or greater than the threshold, the calculated feeding value being calculated based on: the amount of movement of the stage measured by the measuring unit; and the number of paper sheets fed by the feeding process.
