Controlled Translation Method of Affixing a Termination to a Multi-Stranded Tensile Member

A method for creating a termination by attaching some kind of fitting to the end of a tensile member such as a cable. The end fitting is provided with one or more internal cavities. Each cavity has a proximal portion that is adjacent to the area where the tensile member exits the fitting and a distal portion on its opposite end. A length of the tensile member's filaments is placed within this expanding cavity and infused with liquid potting compound. The method exploits the characteristic of a liquid potting compound as it transitions to a solid. During the solidification process tension is applied. The resulting linear displacement tends to pull the filaments residing in the potting compound into better alignment and improve load sharing.

A suspension member equalization system is provided. The suspension member equalization system includes cylinder assemblies configured to receive rods extending from suspension member sockets. The cylinder assemblies have slidable pistons. A manifold block is in fluid communication with the cylinder assemblies. An incompressible fluid is in simultaneous communication with the cylinder assemblies and the manifold block. An upper swash plate is received within a cavity formed in a lower portion of each of the cylinder assemblies and in contact with the cylinder assemblies. A lower swash plate is received within an annular recess of each of the upper swash plates in a manner such that the upper swash plate is rotatable relative to the lower swash plate. The pistons within the cylinder assemblies are configured for movement such as to seek an approximately equal pressure, thereby approximating equal tension in each of the suspension members.

Once the potting compound in at least a portion of the cavity has transitioned sufficiently to hold the filaments at a desired level, tension is placed on the tensile member and a small linear displacement may be imposed on the tensile member. This linear displacement tends to pull the filaments residing in the potting compound into better alignment and improve load sharing. The invention can be applied to single fittings having multiple cavities and to multiple fittings having only one cavity per fitting.

A termination device for a suspension member of an elevator system includes a termination housing, and two wedge assemblies located in the termination housing. The wedge assemblies are interactive with a suspension member end positioned between the two wedge assemblies to apply a clamping force to the suspension member end in response to an axial load acting on the suspension member end. Each wedge assembly includes a wedge and a biasing element operably connected to the wedge to bias a position of the wedge along a suspension member axis direction.
