STENCILED GRID INDEPENDENTLY BACKLIT CHECKERED GAMEBOARD
Regular grid game board such as used for chess or checkers but with stencil filtered back lights used to indicate the dark and light semi-transparent game board regions in lieu of typical reflective game board coloring. This enables game play in dimly lit environments with the use of game board back lighting, but prevents eye strain with the configuration of back lighting for the dark game board regions only. It also enables the use of non traditional checkered colored patterns of similar brightness and hue on the game board, where the light squares are indicated by back lighting and the dark squares are indicated by the the absence of back lighting.
Chess game with position-triggered consequence cards
A chess game kit includes a chessboard defining opposed edges, a lateral axis of symmetry bisecting the chessboard, and a top surface extending between the opposed edges. The top surface defines a plurality of chessboard squares defining a plurality of ranks. The ranks adjacent to the lateral axis of symmetry define two central ranks that together comprise a battle zone. Chessboard squares located outside of the battle zone alternate between a first color and a second color, and chessboard squares located within the battle zone alternate between the first color and a third color. The kit further includes a plurality of cards each reciting a chess game consequence to occur as a result of a player moving a capturing chess piece from a first chessboard position outside of the battle zone to a second chessboard position inside the battle zone to capture an opposing chess piece.

Sensory chessboard and method for detecting positions of chess pieces on a chessboard and transmitting those positions to a computer or other electronic recording device
A chess board, comprising a top layer comprising sixty-four (64) squares of alternating color arranged in eight parallel ranks and eight parallel files, and a bottom layer comprising a circuit board, the circuit board comprising sixty-four (64) radio frequency identification antennas arranged in registration with the sixty-four (64) squares of alternating color in the top layer, and an electronic circuit operatively arranged to sense positions and movement of chess pieces on the sixty-four (64) squares of the top layer and communicate the positions and movement to a computer.

UNCONVENTIONAL VARIATION ON GAME OF CHESS
A board game roughly similar to chess, but having unconventional game elements, is shown and described. The identities of all playing pieces except a king are initially concealed, and revealed after making an initial move. The initial move is predetermined, and changes if the revealed identity differs from a corresponding pre-assigned identity. Move characteristics of the playing pieces are varied in most cases from their counterparts in conventional chess. The king may not leave a certain area of the board, and is not permitted to face an opposed king without presence of an intervening playing piece. A new playing piece with unique move requirements is introduced.
