Method and apparatus for washing pulp by means of intensified suction

A method and an apparatus for washing a solids-containing suspension by means of a suction drum washer comprising a drum provided with a filtration surface, a main vacuum source such as a drop leg and washing tubes connected to the frame of the suction drum washer. A washing liquid stream is introduced by a first washing tube is directed to contact the pulp layer on the surface of the drum in a point below 10 degrees after the surface of the suspension and a vacuum of at least 0.1 bar greater than the main vacuum source, i.e. intensified suction is applied by means of a separate vacuum source to filtering surface at the contacting point of the first liquid stream and the pulp layer or maximum of 10 degrees before the contacting point. The intensified suction may be utilized also for boosting end of filtration stage (II) and drying stage (IV). Filtrate from the drying stage (IV) can be used at the same washer as a washing liquid at the first or the second washing tube.

Device and method for measuring a filter cake thickness

A rotary pressure filter, comprising a filter drum and a housing. A sensor is attached to the housing and emits light through a light-permeable section of the housing in the direction of a filter cake. The sensor receives light reflected from the filter cake through the light-permeable section of the housing. A processing unit compares properties of the emitted light with those of the received light and determines an absolute thickness of the filter cake and/or a change in the thickness of the filter cake over a pre-determined time. The invention further relates to a corresponding method.

The flat face valve can be juxtaposed against drainage outlets of the drainage channels, wherein the flat face valve does not block the drainage outlets during a majority of the rotation of the rotary drum. An opening on the flat face valve may extend through the front surface and be aligned with the drainage outlets to provide a fluid passage through the flat face valve and to a plenum chamber behind the flat face valve such that air in the filtrate is collected in the upper portion of the plenum chamber and removed from the rotary drum.
