Multilayer polymeric membrane

Provided is a novel continuous single-step method of manufacturing a multilayer sorbent polymeric membrane having superior productivity, properties and performance. At least one layer of the polymeric membrane comprises sorbent materials and a plurality of interconnecting pores. The method includes: (a) coextruding layer-forming compositions to form a multilayer coextrudate; (b) casting the coextrudate into a film; (c) extracting the film with an extractant; and (d) removing the extractant from the extracted film to form the multilayer sorbent polymeric membrane. The sorbent membrane of this disclosure can find a wide range of applications for use in filtration, separation and purification of gases and fluids, CO.sub.2 and volatile capture, structural support, vehicle emission control, energy harvesting and storage, electrolyte batteries, device, protection, permeation, packaging, printing, and etc.

CLOSED LOOP AZEOTROPE-BASED SOLVENT EXTRACTION AND RECOVERY METHOD IN THE PRODUCTION OF MICROPOROUS MEMBRANES

An environmentally friendly closed loop manufacturing process (10.sub.1, 10.sub.2) produces microporous membranes (32) by cast or extrusion of polymer-plasticizer mixtures followed by non-porous film formation (20), extraction (22) of the plasticizer using an azeotrope solvent and thereby forming a solvent-laden sheet and a mixture of plasticizer and azeotrope solvent, distillation (28) of the mixture to separate the plasticizer and azeotrope solvent for reuse, evaporation (30) of the azeotrope solvent from the solvent-laden sheet to form the micropores, and capture of the resultant solvent vapor for subsequent adsorption-desorption of the azeotrope solvent from activated carbon (34) or by vapor condensation (36) for reuse in the manufacturing process. The azeotrope solvent is at least a two-component mixture of solvents, one of which is designed for efficient removal of the plasticizer, while the other component(s) render(s) the azeotrope solvent non-flammable.

Disclosed is a method for the production of a porous polymer membrane suitable for liquid filtration or analyte capture, comprising the steps of: providing a flowable composition (100) on a substrate (220) the composition including at least: photo-activatable monomer molecules, photo activation initiator molecules and photo-activation quencher molecules; providing one or more pulses (L) of laser light at at least one focal point in the composition of sufficient energy to locally polymerise the composition; moving the or each focal point relative to the previously polymerised composition in a continuous or stepwise predetermined manner to a multiplicity of further positions; and repeating the pulse(s) at those further positions such that a three dimensional matrix of the composition is polymerised leaving unpolymerized areas of a size equivalent to conventional polymer membrane pores.

Disclosed is a polyvinylidene fluoride/ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene blend microporous membrane and preparation method thereof, which belongs to the field of microporous membrane. The blend microporous membrane has good hydrophobicity, mechanical properties and permeability. The preparation method includes: preparing a suspension by polyvinylidene fluoride, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, antioxidant and diluent; then feeding the obtained suspension into a twin-screw extruder, and the cast membrane gel extruded from the outlet is directly injected into a metal mold for injection molding; the mold temperature and the outlet temperature of the extruder are the same, and the cavity surface of the mold has micro-prism array structure; then cooling the mold in aqueous medium to obtain a nascent gel membrane; drying the obtained nascent gel membrane in a freeze dryer after removal of the diluents by extraction. The prepared membrane can be used in the membrane separation technology such as membrane distillation.
