The invention includes systems, methods, compositions, and processes for designing, manufacturing, and utilizing carbon dioxide-sequestering substrates that can fully or partially replace natural sand in coastal engineering applications. These engineered substrates can offset demand for scarce native sand resources, while also effecting the conversion of gaseous carbon dioxide to dissolved or solid-phase products thereby offsetting impacts of anthropogenic climate change.

Multistage desalination process with carbon dioxide capture

A system and method of desalinating a brine stream are provided. The multistage desalination process with carbon dioxide capture recovers valuable products where the reject brine is passed through seven stages. In each stage, a specific metal ion is recovered. In stage 1, a ˜100% recovery of magnesium ions as magnesium hydroxide solid was obtained by chemical reaction with ammonia solution. In stage 2, Na.sup.+ reduction, as sodium bicarbonate, and CO.sub.2 uptake was achieved. In stage 3, electrocoagulation (EC) was used to recover sulfate ions as pure calcium sulfate solid and to regenerate NH.sub.3 as ammonium hydroxide. In stage 4, CaO was added to the treated brine. In stage 5, more recovery of NaHCO.sub.3 was attained by adding ammonium bicarbonate, while in stage 6, the treated brine mixture was passed through another modified Solvay process. In stage 7, EC was again used to recover CaCl.sub.2 solution and NH.sub.3 compounds.

APPARATUS FOR REDUCING GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION IN VESSEL AND VESSEL INCLUDING THE SAME

Or in which exhaust gas is cooled by a heat exchange method, thereby preventing a decrease in a concentration of an absorbent liquid, and an absorbent liquid recycling unit is provided in two or more stages so that an unreacted aqueous ammonium salt solution remaining in ammonia water is removed, thereby increasing a recovery rate of the absorbent liquid and preventing a deterioration in greenhouse gas absorption performance.

CAPTURE AND STORAGE OF ATMOSPHERIC CARBON

A method and system for sequestration of carbon dioxide from atmospheric air is disclosed. The method and system comprise the enabling of atmospheric air (16) to pass into an upper end of an elongate hollow tower (10). An aqueous solution (14) is charged (e.g. via a distributor) so as to mix with the atmospheric air within and adjacent to the tower upper end in a manner such that the air is cooled by evaporative cooling. As a result, the mixture passes downwards as a stream (22) through the hollow tower. The aqueous solution comprises a reagent added thereto that reacts with the carbon dioxide to form a compound in the solution to thereby sequester the carbon dioxide from the atmospheric air. The method and system also comprise generating electricity (32, 33, 35) (e.g. in an apparatus such as a gas turbine) from the downwards stream that is passing through the hollow tower.

Method of safely emitting high-temperature exhaust gas for offshore platform, and cooling and purification device

A process for discharging high-temperature flue gas safely from an ocean platform includes discharging the gas from combustion facilities into a main body of a cooling and cleaning device through an exhaust pipe, while sea water is injected into the main body. The injected water passes through a water distributor located at an upper part, and the scrubbing sea water is sprayed downwards. The high-temperature flue gas enters into a lower part, and the gas is scrubbed by the sprayed sea water to be low-temperature clean flue gas. The low-temperature clean flue gas passes through the water distributor and a mist eliminator, and is discharged into atmosphere through an outlet at a top of the main body. The sea water is collected to a liquid pool located at a lower part of the main body and discharged into the ocean. A cooling and cleaning device is also disclosed.
