Method for making catalyst for ozone decomposition
A method for making a catalyst for ozone decomposition includes: adding a reducing agent into a water solution of a permanganate salt to obtain a first reaction liquid, and heating the first reaction liquid under continuous stirring to form a birnessite-type manganese dioxide; and adding the birnessite-type manganese dioxide into a water solution of an ammonium salt to obtain a second reaction liquid, and heating the second reaction liquid under continuous stirring to form the catalyst.
PARTICULATE FILTER
A particulate filter includes a base material having a wall-flow structure including porous partition walls partitioning inlet and outlet cells, and wash-coating layers held inside partition walls. The wash-coating layers include inlet layers each formed from vicinity of an end portion at exhaust gas inflow side to have predetermined length and thickness and outlet layers each formed from vicinity of end portion at exhaust gas outflow side to have a predetermined length and thickness. The inlet and the outlet layers partially overlap with each other. Inlet layers of particulate filter contain substantially no noble metal catalyst, and outlet layers contain noble metal catalyst. Accordingly, PM collection performance can be easily enhanced in inlet region, and high gas distributability (pressure loss suppression performance) can be maintained in outlet region. Accordingly, it is possible to provide particulate filter capable of achieving high levels of PM collection performance and pressure loss suppression performance.

Catalyst portions (14, 15) are provided on surfaces of the partition walls that each face the inflow-side cell and/or surfaces of the partition walls that each face the outflow-side cell. In a cross section vertical to an exhaust gas flow direction, the percentage of the total area of voids, each void satisfying the expression L/{2(πS).sup.1/2}≤1.1, wherein L is the perimeter of the void in the cross section and S is the area of the void in the cross section, is from 3 to 10% based on the apparent area of the catalyst portion present on the partition wall.
