An appliance for producing a personal care product. The appliance includes a reaction chamber configured to receive one or more ingredients of the personal care product. The reaction chamber includes a mechanism for mixing ingredients and an extruding mechanism. The appliance also includes a sensor configured to determine one or more conditions in the reaction chamber, the one or more conditions includes at least a pH of the personal care product. The appliance further includes a cartridge, where the cartridge holds at least one of the one or more ingredients of the personal care product. The appliance additionally includes an output port configured to allow removal of the personal care product from the reaction chamber.

A method is provided for monitoring a flow behavior of mixed components without requiring additional instrumentation or sampling. The method is carried out by determining ratios of the power required to rotate a mixing impeller at different rotational speeds and then comparing the ratios. Characteristics about the mixed components are determined based on differences between the ratios.

The sensors may detect the mixture characteristics continuously, at intervals or as prompted by a user. The mixture characteristics may be used, in the sensors or in control circuitry, to generate an indication of the concentration of a first constituent substance in the mixture. Based on the detected concentration, the mixing apparatus may automatically adjust a supply of the first substance to the mixing zone or conduit (112).
