A method for producing a crystalline film comprising zeolite and/or zeolite-like crystals on a porous substrate is described. The method has the steps of: providing a porous support; modifying at least a surface of the top-layer of said porous support by treatment with a composition having one or more cationic polymer(s); rendering at least the outer surface of said porous support hydrophobic by treatment with a composition having one or more hydrophobic agent(s); subjecting said treated porous support to a composition having zeolite and/or zeolite-like crystals thereby depositing and attaching zeolite and/or zeolite-like crystals on said treated porous support, and growing a crystalline film of zeolite and/or zeolite-like crystals on said treated porous support and calcination. Crystalline films find use in a variety of fields such as in the production of membranes, catalysts etc.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR SOLAR-POWERED DESALINATION AND WATER PURIFICATION

A novel solar-powered desalination and water purification system is disclosed herein. The system includes a nanofiber-impregnated graphene aerogel, an untreated water source, a water collection surface, and a purified water storage container. A novel photocatalytic nanofiber-impregnated graphene aerogel for desalination and photodegradation of contaminants for use in the disclosed system is also disclosed herein. The nanofiber-impregnated graphene aerogel exhibits excellent hydrophilicity, thermal insulation, and photodegradation capability, and allows for efficient solar-powered evaporation of water. The introduction of photocatalytic nanofibers into the graphene aerogel allows effective interfacial evaporation and in situ photodegradation of contaminants. The rate of water evaporation is preferably greater than 1.3 gal/ft.sup.2 per day, and the contaminant removal is preferably greater than 90%. A method of desalinating and purifying water using the disclosed system is also disclosed herein.

A method of producing bifunctional catalyst systems that include a carbon-coated metal catalyst may comprise: coating a metal catalyst particle with a carbon-containing small molecule to produce a coated metal catalyst particle; carbonizing the carbon-containing small molecule on the coated metal catalyst particle to produce a carbon-coated metal catalyst particle; and mixing the carbon-coated metal catalyst particle with an acid catalyst particle to produce an acid/metal bifunctional catalyst system. Further, a method of producing bifunctional catalyst systems that include a carbon-coated acid catalyst may be similarly performed by coating a metal catalyst particle with a carbon-containing small molecule to produce a coated metal catalyst particle; carbonizing the carbon-containing small molecule on the coated metal catalyst particle to produce a carbon-coated metal catalyst particle; and mixing the carbon-coated metal catalyst particle with an acid catalyst particle to produce an acid/metal bifunctional catalyst system.

A catalyst for non-oxidative dehydrogenation of alkanes and a method for making and using the same is disclosed. The catalyst can include vanadium oxide derived from vanadyl oxalate. More particularly the catalyst is prepared by a method comprising the steps of: (a) contacting a transition alumina support with an aqueous solution comprising a vanadium carboxylate material solubilized therein; (b) heating the contacted alumina support to remove the water and produce a catalyst precursor material in solid form; and (c) heating the solid catalyst precursor material in the presence of an oxidizing source at a temperature of 500 to 800° C. to produce an alumina supported catalytic material comprising vanadium oxide. The catalyst can be further modified with an alkali metal oxide like potassium oxide, the precursor thereof being introduced with the impregnation solution.

The present invention relates to a catalyst washcoat composition comprising a slurry comprising at least one platinum group metal and/or at least one non-platinum group metal supported on at least one support; and at least one pore forming agent having a particle size ranging from 100 nm to 5.0 μm, wherein the pore forming agent is selected from carbon nano-tubes, carbon nano-fibres, activated carbon, resins, cellulose powder, and polymer spheres. The present invention also provides a catalyst article for capturing particulate matter of size ranging from 1.0 nm to 100 μm, said article comprising the catalyst washcoat deposited on a substrate and calcined to form pores of which 50%-100% have a pore size ranging from 100 nm to 5.0 μm.
