A system to generate gases from a liquid or a solid source including a generator, a dual arbitrary generator, a turbine, a thermoelectric generator, a pulse-width modulation device, a suction pump, a radiolytic cell, and magnets. The radiolytic cell includes a body, a first disk, a second disk having a plurality of perforations, and a plurality of radiotrodes. Each radiotrodes includes a large diameter tube, a small diameter tube concentric with the large diameter tube, and metallic wires having an end fixed into an upper section of the large and small diameter tubes and to lower sections of the large and small diameter tubes. The second ends of each one of the metallic wires are connected into the perforations of the corresponding first disk or second disk. The radiotrodes hang up inside the radiolytic cells by the metallic wires producing movement or vibration of the radiotrodes inside the radiolytic cell.
Laser-colored sapphire material
A colored sapphire material and methods for coloring sapphire material using lasers are disclosed. The method for coloring the sapphire material may include positioning the sapphire material over an opaque substrate material, exposing the opaque substrate material to a laser beam passing through the sapphire material to impact the substrate material, and inducing a chemical change in a portion of the sapphire material exposed to the laser beam. The method may also include creating a visible color in the portion of the sapphire material as a result of the chemical change. The colored sapphire material may include a first transparent portion, and a second, colored portion substantially surrounded by the first portion. The second, colored portion may have a chemical composition different than that of the first portion.
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PATTERNING FLOW CELL SUBSTRATES
A method for patterning flow cell substrates using photo-initiated chemical reactions that includes fabricating a planar waveguide flow cell by forming a layer of light coupling gratings on a glass substrate layer; depositing a core layer on the layer of light coupling gratings; depositing a cladding layer on the core layer; and forming nanowells in the cladding layer; silanizing the cladding layer; coating the silanized cladding layer and nanowells with a first group of reactants; introducing a second group of reactants into the nanowells, wherein the second group of reactants includes a target reactant and a light-sensitive photoinitiator system; coupling a light source to the light coupling gratings and directing light internally within the planar waveguide flow cell for photo-initiating a chemical reaction between the first and second groups of reactants, wherein the photo-initiated chemical reaction covalently binds the target reactant to only the bottom portion of each nanowell.
SYSTEM FOR TREATMENT AND/OR COATING OF SUBSTRATES
A system for treating a substrate comprising a treatment module and a substrate plane. The substrate extending along a substrate plane to treat the substrate and wherein a fluid is deliverable via the module to a local region between the module and the substrate plane to treat the substrate with a predetermined treatment.
METHODS FOR BLOCKING HEAVY METALS FROM ENTERING PLANT EXTRACTS
Disclosed are methods for pretreating a plant material prior to solvent extraction, wherein the methods comprise subjecting a comminuted dried plant material to non-ionizing radiation at an energy input of equal to or greater than about 0.02 kWh per 1 kg of dried plant material. Also disclosed are methods of extracting plant metabolites from a plant material, the methods comprising comminuting a dried plant material, subjecting the comminuted plant material to a non-ionizing radiation at an energy input of equal to or greater than about 0.02 kWh per 1 kg of dried plant material to thereby pretreat the plant material, contacting the pretreated plant material with a solvent, and recovering a solubilized extract therefrom.
METHOD FOR CONDITIONING ION EXCHANGE RESINS AND APPARATUS FOR CARRYING OUT THE METHOD
A method for conditioning of spent ion exchange resins from nuclear facilities comprises the steps of: mixing the spent ion exchange resins with water to form a reaction mixture; setting and controlling the pH of the reaction mixture in a range from 1.0 to 3.5, preferably in a range from 2.0 to 3.0; adding an oxidant to the reaction mixture, with the temperature of the reaction mixture maintained at 90 ° ° C. or less so that the spent ion exchange resin and the oxidant react with each other to form an aqueous reaction solution comprising the organic reaction products of the spent ion exchange resin; and electrochemically oxidizing the organic reaction products, wherein carbon dioxide is produced and a carbon-depleted aqueous reaction solution having a TOC (total organic carbon) value of less than 50 ppm is obtained. Furthermore, an apparatus for the conditioning of spent ion exchange resins from nuclear facilities is described.
