An apparatus and method for producing a coated analytic substrate using a compact and portable automated instrument located in the laboratory setting at the point of use which can consistently produce one or a plurality of coated analytic substrates “on demand” for using the analytic substrate immediately after coating, preferably without a step of rinsing the coated analytic substrate before use. The apparatus preferably uses applicator cartridges having a reservoir containing the coating compositions used to form the coatings. Preferably the cartridges are removable and interchangeable to facilitate the production of individual analytic substrates having different coatings or different coating patterns. These coated analytic substrates have superior specimen adhesion characteristics due to the improved quality of the coatings applied by the coating apparatus and due to the quickness with which the coated analytic substrates can be used in the lab after production.

Method of analysis. In the method, a microfluidic device defining a flow path extending from an inlet to an outlet may be selected. A sample-containing fluid may be introduced into the flow path via the inlet. Volumes of the sample-containing fluid may be isolated from one another on the flow path. A two-dimensional monolayer of the volumes may be imaged. The two-dimensional monolayer may be formed along the flow path between the inlet and the outlet.

The invention is a slide cleaner apparatus. The apparatus includes a cleaning chamber configured to receive a cell counting slide, at least one fluid inlet arranged to align with an inlet on a cell counting slide when located in the chamber, and configured to feed cleaning fluid into the cleaning chamber and slide, and at least one fluid outlet configured to remove cleaning fluid from the cleaning chamber and slide. An analyzer and method of analyzing a sample are provided. The method includes providing a sample on a substrate, and irradiating the sample with at least three incident beams of light. Each of the incident beams contains light of a different frequency, and the sample is substantially transmissive at each of the different frequencies. The method also includes providing a light sensing arrangement to receive light patterns from the incident beams that have passed through the substrate, and analyzing properties of the sample through identifying properties of the light patterns arising from diffraction of the light of the three incident beams by the sample. A difference in frequency between first and second ones of the incident beams is the same as a difference in frequency between second and third ones of the incident beams.
