An apparatus for providing non-contact application of fluids onto web materials and articles is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a gravure roll having a hollow rotating shell having a plurality of cavities disposed within the outer surface thereof and a stationary cylindrical core having a central bore and a channel disposed therein. A fluid disposed within a respective cavity of the plurality of cavities disposed within the outer surface of the hollow rotating shell is removed from the respective cavity by the positive pressure when the positive pressure is fluidly communicated from the central bore through the channel and into the cavity from the surface of the stationary cylindrical core.

The enamel coating method includes (a) preprocessing a surface of the metal tube by feeding the metal tube into a preprocessing chamber by an in-feed conveyor; (b) coating the surface of the metal tube with an enamel glaze supplied from an enamel glaze supply nozzle provided inside a coating chamber by feeding the preprocessed metal tube into the coating chamber; and (c) firing the coated metal tube by feeding the coated metal tube into a firing chamber, wherein the (b) coating includes spraying air toward the metal tube by an air spray nozzle provided inside the coating chamber.

An apparatus and process for applying a coating material onto a substrate as a non-uniform layer of coating material, the method including providing a distribution manifold having a cavity and a plurality of dispensing outlets in fluid communication with the cavity, creating relative motion between a substrate and the dispensing outlets in a first direction, and dispensing coating material from the dispensing outlets while simultaneously translating the plurality of dispensing outlets in a second direction non-parallel to the first direction. Using the process, coated articles having a useful non-uniform coating or coatings can be prepared, in particular self-adhesive vapor permeable air and moisture barrier membranes for use as architectural structure wraps.

A method of making an article having a substrate and two materials applied thereto includes providing a metered fluid dispensing system having first and second supply sources for supplying first and second fluids, respectively, an output device having at least one dispensing nozzle, and at least two pumps for pumping the first and second fluids from their respective supply sources to the at least one dispensing nozzle, the pumps being in close proximity to the dispensing nozzle. The dispensing system is configured to selectively control the passage of the first and second fluids from each one of the at least two pumps to the at least one dispensing nozzle. The substrate is conveyed past the fluid dispensing system in a machine direction and the first, or second, or first and second fluids are applied to the substrate in a plurality of segments, each segment having a volume per unit length and applied in a length in the machine direction to define a pattern, and in which wherein the pattern includes at least some areas in which the first or second fluid is present without the other fluid.

A method for applying individual portions of adhesive to a substrate, in which the portions of adhesive are applied successively by means of a valve, a coil of an electromagnet being energized with an actuation voltage pulse for each successive dispensing of portions of adhesive from the valve, which causes a valve opening of the valve for an actual opening duration during which adhesive can flow out of the valve for dispensing the respective adhesive portion by moving a closure member of the valve from a closed position into an open position. The actual opening duration of at least one valve opening which follows a valve opening which precedes it in time is shortened in accordance with one or more valve operating parameters to compensate for electromagnetic interference effects which extend the actual opening duration of the subsequent valve opening.
