Log scanning system
A log scanning system and method for scanning a log load. Each individual log in the log load may have an ID element with a unique log ID data on at least one log end face. The system has a handheld scanner unit for free-form scanning by an operator over a load end face of the log load. The scanner unit has a depth sensor configured to capture a series of depth images of the load end face and a texture sensor configured to capture a series of texture images of the load end face during the load end face scan. The system also has a data processor(s) that receives and processes the depth and texture images captured from the scan. The processor(s) are configured to fuse the depth images or depth and texture images into a data model of the load end face, determine log end boundaries of the individual logs visible in the load end face by processing the data model, process the texture images to identify and decode any ID elements visible in the scan to extract individual log ID data, and generate output data representing the log load based on the determined log end boundaries and extracted log ID data.

Lumber Use Designation System And Method
A lumber use designation system includes a building construction plan that shows the layout of a structure and a coding from a series of codes each corresponding to a board length of lumber that should be selected for constructing a particular portion of the structure. A supply of lumber boards marked with a first board marking readable by an electronic scanner and a second board marking observable for selecting, which first and second board marking correlate to the board code found on the construction plans. The first board marking facilitates selecting a lumber board such as at a production facility. The second board marking facilitates selecting a lumber board at a job site for constructing the portion of the structure. A method of installing lumber during the construction of a structure is disclosed.

Finishing Line Automatic Inspection System and Method
Automatic detection of mechanical defects in piece parts, such as floor covering planks, enables removal of the defective parts off an inspection path. A bypass conveyor system enables defective parts to be transported beyond or around a manual inspection, enabling personnel performing the subsequent inspection to focus on appearance defects. Once the remaining parts have been inspected by a manual process, the parts transported by the bypass conveyor system are returned to the production line. Defective parts may be distinguished by a marking capability that provides the ability to mark according to a variety of classes of defects.
Method of facilitating check grader reaction to output produced by automatic board lumber grading system
A method of improving board feature quality grading facilitates human check grader reaction to grading output. The method entails specifying, for application by an automatic grading system to the faces of boards passing through a scanning zone, a virtual grade expressed by a range of values that overlap values in two of successive standard rule-based grades representing higher and lower board feature qualities; producing a signal in response to detection of a board feature quality representing a virtual grade value of a board analyzed by the automatic grading system; indicating, in response to the signal, a virtual grading designation onto the board to alert a check grader to assess whether the board exhibits board feature quality that exceeds the lower board feature quality; and assigning to the board the standard rule-based grade representing the higher board feature quality whenever the check grader's assessment concurs with the virtual grade designation.

Lumber bin sorter
A bin sorter for sorting lumber is provided. The bin sorter includes a plurality of bins disposed in a side-by-side configuration. Each bin includes a pair of spaced-apart walls defining a compartment therebetween for receiving lumber. Each compartment has a compartment inlet provided at a top end thereof, and a compartment outlet provided at a bottom end thereof. At least one of the plurality of bins has a support assembly for supporting one or more piles of lumber within the compartment. The support assembly includes a pair of support members having a support base vertically displaceable between the top and bottom ends of the compartment and a support arm connected to the support base and extending within the compartment towards the other support arm. Each support arm is adapted to support a respective pile of lumber or cooperate with one another to support a single pile of lumber.
