A method for fabricating a structured surface, includes: providing a transparent substrate; disposing a dewettable film over the substrate; annealing the dewettable film to form a plurality of islands; forming a coating over the plurality of islands; and etching the plurality of islands to form a structured array of surface features in the coating. A structured polymer and/or structured glass, includes: a structured array of surface features, such that the structured array of surface features has at least one dimension in a range of 0.5 nm to 5000 nm.
SELECTIVE TERMINATION OF SUPERHYDROPHOBIC SURFACES
Provided herein is a hierarchical superhydrophobic surface comprising an array of first geometrical features disposed on a substrate comprising a first material and a terminal level disposed on the second features, wherein the terminal level comprises a second material, the second material being different from the first material. The second material has a hydrophilicity different from the hydrophilicity of at least one of 1) the hydrophilicity of the second material and 2) hydrophilicity induced by the hierarchical structure. The present disclosure further includes methods of preparing hierarchical superhydrophobic surfaces and medical devices comprising the hierarchical superhydrophobic surfaces.
Superhydrophobic hemispherical array which can realize droplet pancake bouncing phenomenon
A superhydrophobic hemispherical array which can realize droplet pancake bouncing phenomenon is provided. The superhydrophobic hemispherical array shows an arc-shape structure which is narrow at the top and wide at the bottom, where a is the angle that substrate-gas interface goes across the gas and reaches substrate-hemisphere interface, d refers to the diameter of the contact area between hemispherical structure and substrate, s represents the space between two adjoining hemispheres, h denotes the vertical height from the top of hemisphere to substrate surface, and 70°≤a≤90°, 900 μm≤d ≤1700 μm, s≤550 μm, 600 μm≤h≤1100 μm, respectively. The superhydrophobic hemispherical array has a water contact angle larger than 150° and roll-off angle lower than 10°.
Microstructured surface with increased microorganism removal when cleaned, articles and methods
Films and articles are described comprising a microstructured surface having an array of peak structures and adjacent valleys. For improved cleanability, the valleys preferably have a maximum width ranging from 10 microns to 250 microns and the peak structures have a side wall angle greater than 10 degrees. The peak structures may comprise two or more facets such as in the case of a linear array of prisms or an array of cube-corners elements. The facets form continuous or semi-continuous surfaces in the same direction. The valleys typically lack intersecting walls. Also described are methods of making and methods of use. The microstructured surface of the article can be prepared by various microreplication techniques such as coating, injection molding, embossing, laser etching, extrusion, casting and curing a polymerizable resin; and bonding microstructured film to a surface or article with an adhesive.
SURFACE MICROSTRUCTURES
A method of manufacturing and a surface microstructure that includes a surface; and a plurality of protrusions on the surface, where each of the protrusions has a width that changes along its length, where the protrusions are all oriented in substantially the same direction; and where the protrusions each have a length between 10 and 1000 μm and a maximum width between 5 and 100 μm.
APPARATUSES FOR CLEANING CATHETER PORTS
Methods and apparatus for cleaning a central venous catheter port are disclosed. An apparatus includes a body, a coupling configured to connect the body to the hub, a cleaning cap coupled to the body, and an actuator disposed within the body for rotating and translating the cap relative to the hub. The cleaning cap includes a cap body defining a cavity and a cleaning member disposed within the cavity, the cleaning member having threads that engage with the threads on the hub.
Reinforced composites with repellent and slippery properties
Compositions and processes are disclosed for forming hydrophobic coatings and lubricant-infused surface coatings. Coatings may be applied to various substrates without prior chemical or temperature treatment of the substrates and over large and irregular surfaces. Coatings are self-healing, antifouling, and have enhanced lifetimes.
Slippery self-lubricating polymer surfaces
The present disclosure describes a strategy to create self-healing, slippery self-lubricating polymers. Lubricating liquids with affinities to polymers can be utilized to get absorbed within the polymer and form a lubricant layer (of the lubricating liquid) on the polymer. The lubricant layer can repel a wide range of materials, including simple and complex fluids (water, hydrocarbons, crude oil and bodily fluids), restore liquid-repellency after physical damage, and resist ice, microorganisms and insects adhesion. Some exemplary applications where self-lubricating polymers will be useful include energy-efficient, friction-reduction fluid handling and transportation, medical devices, anti-icing, optical sensing, and as self-cleaning, and anti-fouling materials operating in extreme environments.
SELF-CLEANING DEVICE AND METHODS RELATING THERETO
A self-cleaning device and methods relating thereto can include a base, a plurality of channels formed in a first surface of the base, where the plurality of channels divide the first surface of the base into a plurality of sections, a plurality of cavities formed within the base, where each cavity of the plurality of cavities are disposed adjacent a corresponding section of the plurality of sections, and one or more capillary channels formed between the first surface of the base on the corresponding section and the corresponding cavity.
