A play device includes an outer shell, a holding compound, and at least one activatable character concealed within the compound. The character has a resilient/elastomeric body and at least one appendage. The character may bend, stretch, and/or be compressed. The compound is capable of temporarily confining a character covered with the compound. The compound gradually releases the character from a deformed state within the compound to an un-deformed state. The outer shell holds the deformed character within the compound to prevent the character from progressing to an activated, undeformed state until the user is ready to activate the character by releasing the character from the outer shell. Spring forces associated with the resilient or elastomeric material of the character allows it to progress from the deformed state to the un-deformed state in which the character expands and at least a portion of the character breaks free from the compound.

The apparatus and a method provide a powder and liquid to a user, which can be a non-skilled person and thereby allow the mixing of the powder and liquid together by that person to form the play compound outside of a factory environment whilst ensuring that the play compound which is formed has the desired characteristics. Most typically the user which performs the mixing can be the end user, such as a child, who will play with the compound and so the formation of the play compound forms a new part of the play experience.

The malleable material may adapted as any known malleable play material including binder, filler, fluid and a filler setting inhibitor. The non-soluble fiber may be a coarse or fine, long or short, polyester, silk or other similar or equivalent material. The fibers may be of different colors. The fibers may be of different textures or a combination of textures. The fibers may be incorporated in various amounts. The ratio of non-Newtonian fluid to fiber rations may be between about 2:1 to about 50:1 by weight. The use of one or more than one different color of fiber may be utilized. The resulting play material compound may be utilized in hand molding or manipulation in which substantial enjoyment and amusement is provided in the handling of the play material.
