In one aspect, additive manufacture techniques are described herein which enable the densification of green articles prior to further article processing. In some embodiments, a method of forming an article comprises providing a powder composition, and forming the powder composition into a green article by one or more additive manufacturing techniques. The green article is contacted with a powder pressure transfer media. The green article and powder pressure transfer media are then subjected to cold isostatic pressing (CIP) or warm isostatic pressing (WIP) at a pressure less than minimum isostatic compaction pressure of the powder pressure transfer media to provide a densified green article.

Method for fabricating components using hybrid additive manufacturing and consolidation process

A method of fabricating a near net shape component includes forming a sacrificial shell from a pulverant material using an additive manufacturing process, the shell having an aperture. The method further includes filling the shell with a second pulverant material, subjecting the filled shell to a consolidation process, and removing the shell from the consolidated second pulverant material.

A method of producing composites of micro-engineered, coated particulates embedded in a matrix of metal, ceramic powders, or combinations thereof, capable of being tailored to exhibit application-specific desired thermal, physical and mechanical properties, such as High Altitude Exo-atmospheric Nuclear Standard (HAENS) I, II or III radiation protection, to form substitute materials for nickel, titanium, rhenium, magnesium, aluminum, graphite epoxy, and beryllium. The particulates are solid and/or hollow and may be coated with one or more layers of deposited materials before being combined within a substrate of powder metal, ceramic or some combination thereof which also may be coated. The combined micro-engineered nano design powder is consolidated using novel solid-state processes that prevent melting of the matrix and which involve the application of varying pressures to control the formation of the microstructure and resultant mechanical properties.
