A method for forming an object having a three-dimensional target shape, that makes use of a build powder, a support powder and a binder. The build powder is more strongly bound by the binder than is the support powder. The build powder and the support powder are dispensed in a sequence of layers of build powder patterned with support powder that collectively form the three-dimensional shape in build powder, and the binder is applied to the deposited build powder, thereby forming the object of build powder and binder. Finally, the formed object is separated from the support powder.

Braze preform for powder metal sintering

A planetary carrier subassembly for a transmission is provided that is sintered using braze preforms. The carrier subassembly may include a powder metal carrier member having a plurality of carrier legs extending a distance therefrom, and a powder metal cover member having a plurality of cover legs extending a distance therefrom. The carrier member and cover member are positioned such that respective ends of the carrier legs and ends of the cover legs are aligned with one another. The subassembly is provided with at least one braze preform including a braze material and a sacrificial binder, such as a wax. The braze preform is placed between a respective pair of the aligned carrier legs and the cover legs. The braze preform is provided with a geometry configured to direct a flow of braze material during a subsequent sintering process.

Mold Assemblies that Actively Heat Infiltrated Downhole Tools

A mold assembly and method for fabricating an infiltrated drill bit may comprise a mold forming a bottom of the mold assembly, a funnel operatively coupled to the mold, an infiltration chamber defined at least partially by the mold and the funnel to receive and contain matrix reinforcement materials and a binder material used to form the infiltrated drill bit, a displacement core arranged within the infiltration chamber and having one or more legs that extend therefrom, a metal blank arranged about the displacement core within the infiltration chamber, and one or more thermal elements. A method may comprise providing a mold assembly having component parts that include a mold that forms a bottom of the mold assembly and a funnel operatively coupled to the mold, imparting thermal energy to the infiltration chamber with one or more thermal element, and heating contents contained within the infiltration chamber.

Provided is a mining bit and a method for manufacturing the same wherein a plurality of cutting tips are provided in such a manner as to be easily made with a high concentration of abrasive particles, rounded on a cut surface to induce optimal abrasion, and have a shape of an arch having the same width and rounded on inner and outer surfaces thereof. The mining bit includes: a shank; and cutting tips attached to the shank, each cutting tip having a plurality of layers and a plurality of abrasive particles, wherein the layers have a shape of an arch with flat surfaces in such a manner as to be laminated onto each other in a horizontal direction with respect to a cut surface of each cutting tip, and a distance (D2) between the abrasive particles on the adjacent layers is less than a distance (D1) between the abrasive particles on each layer.

PcBN compact for machining of ferrous alloys

The present application is a new improvement in the fine-grained cubic Boron Nitride sintered compact which may be employed to manufacture a cutting tool. The compact contains at least 80 vol % cBN and is sintered under HPHT conditions. The invention has lower levels of unreacted cobalt in the final sintered material than conventions materials. The invention has proved beneficial in the machining of ferrous metal alloys such as sintered metal alloys.

Surface coating for metal matrix composites

A method of fabricating a metal matrix composite (MMC) tool includes coating at least a portion of an interior of a mold assembly with one or more layers of a material coating, where the mold assembly defines at least a portion of an infiltration chamber. Reinforcing materials are deposited into the infiltration chamber, and infiltrated with a binder material. One or more layers of the material coating may then be reacted with the binder material to form an outer shell on selected outer surfaces of the MMC tool.
