Welding auxiliary joining part

A welding auxiliary joining part with which a welding connection, more particularly a resistance welding connection, can be established between a first component A made of a poorly weldable material and a second component made of weldable material. The welding auxiliary joining part is distinguished by a cylindrical punch shaft that can be punchingly pressed into the first component A approximately rotation-free. The punch shaft has an element head at the head underside of which only one continuous circumferential clamping ring is arranged that projects axially in the direction of the punch shaft.

An apparatus and method for fastening dissimilar metals like steel and aluminum utilizes a steel rivet and a spot welding machine. The rivet and metals are stacked and the heat from the welder's electric current softens the lower melting point aluminum allowing the rivet to penetrate the aluminum and weld to the steel layer. The fastener may be used to join stacks with several layers of different materials and may be used to apply a threaded socket or stud made from steel or titanium to an aluminum or magnesium alloy structure. Layers of non-conductive materials like plastic and ceramics may also be affixed to a conductive layer using the fastener made from a compatible material that extends through a pilot hole.

SYSTEM AND METHOD OF JOINING OF DISSIMILAR MATERIALS

A process, system and method of joining dissimilar materials. The process utilizes a rivet configured to extend through two layers or dissimilar materials in various configurations. The rivet is inserted using both force and heat generated through resistance heating, specifically one sided spot welding. Preheating may be used to assist with penetration of the rivet into the materials.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR RESIZING HOLES

The present application thus provides a method of filling an existing hole in a surface of a turbine component. The method may include the steps of enlarging the existing hole, placing a rivet into the enlarged hole, welding the rivet into place, and grinding the rivet to be flush with the surface of the turbine component.

A coupling device couples, using a coupling member, a first plate of a first metal to a second plate of a second metal. A power source is connected to first and second electrodes. A driver moves the first and second electrodes relative to the coupling member and the first and second plates. A controller controls the power source and the driver to electrify the coupling member and the first and second plates under pressure. The coupling member includes a third metal approximately identical to the second metal. The first metal has a melting point lower than melting points of the second and third metals. The coupling member includes a pilot portion that is located about a center of a flat surface of a body of the coupling member and that protrudes in an extending direction. The flat surface has discharge grooves radially extending from the pilot portion.

Assembly and method of pretreating localized areas of parts for joining

An assembly and a method of joining a first part with a second part at an attachment area that includes a localized area on the first part. The localized area is cleaned and activated by a plasma jet. An organosilicon composition is applied by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition to the localized area. An adhesive is applied to the localized area and the second part is mechanically fastened to the first part in the localized area.

An apparatus and method for fastening layers of non-ferrous alloys, like aluminum, magnesium and copper utilizes a steel fastener and a spot welding machine. The fastener and metals are stacked and the heat from the welder's electric current softens the lower melting point aluminum allowing the fastener to penetrate the aluminum. A weld zone between the fastener and the various layers creates an internal weld. The fastener has a rough shaft that is coated by the molten weld zone and is hard to withdraw on solidification. Layers of non-conductive materials like plastics and ceramics may also be affixed to a conductive layer using a fastener made from a compatible material that extends through a pilot hole and welds to or penetrates a conductive layer. The fastener may have projections that initially reduce contact area with the stack.

A joining-member welding unit includes a first member made of metal, a second member overlapped with one surface of the first member, a joining member made of the same kind of metal as the first member, and a welder. The second member has a through-hole defined by an inner wall surface thereof. The inner wall surface and the one surface define a recessed portion. The joining member includes a large-diameter plate portion having an outer diameter larger than a diameter of the through-hole and a thickness smaller than the diameter of the through-hole, and a protruding portion protruding from the large-diameter plate portion and to be inserted into the through-hole. The welder includes a holding portion that holds the joining member. The welder applies an electric current to the joining member to melt the protruding portion such that the first member and the second member are joined together.
