A workpiece is described, and includes a substrate, a cable, and a cover piece. A portion of the cable is joined to the substrate employing a vibration welding tool, and the cover piece is interposed between the portion of the cable and the vibration welding tool during the joining.

METAL COMPOSITE AND METAL JOINING METHOD
A metal composite and a metal joining method that are capable of suppressing an influence on joining strength of a friction stir welded section due to a tool hole formed when a tool is extracted, in the case in which two metals are joined through friction stir welding. In an overlapping section in an axial direction in which a first shaft and a second shaft overlap in the axial direction, an inscribed section in which the first shaft and the second shaft come in contact with each other and an non-inscribed section in which the first shaft and the second shaft do not come in contact with each other are formed. In the non-inscribed section, a plate thickness of the second shaft is decreased. Then, a starting point of a friction stir welded section is formed in the inscribed section, and an endpoint is formed in the non-inscribed section.
Two-Stage Corrosion Barrier Between Two Work Pieces
A method and assembly for preventing corrosion between two work pieces. At least a portion of a neck portion of a second end portion of an end piece is disposed within a hollow portion in a first end portion of a drive shaft tube. The inner surface of the first end portion of the drive shaft tube is magnetic pulse welded to a first tapered portion of the neck portion of the end piece. A coating and a sacrificial material is applied over an interface between an end surface of said first end portion of said drive shaft and said end piece defining a gap. The coating and sacrificial material is then leveled and a shrink-wrap material is disposed radially outboard from the gap. Finally, heat is applied to the shrink-wrap material sealing said gap.
Welding light metal workpieces by reaction metallurgy
Aluminum alloy workpieces and/or magnesium alloy workpieces are joined in a solid state weld by use of a reactive material placed, in a suitable form, at the joining surfaces. Joining surfaces of the workpieces are pressed against the interposed reactive material and heated. The reactive material alloys or reacts with the workpiece surfaces consuming some of the surface material in forming a reaction product comprising a low melting liquid that removes oxide films and other surface impediments to a welded bond across the interface. Further pressure is applied to expel the reaction product and to join the workpiece surfaces in a solid state weld bond.
Roll-bonded laminate and method for producing the same
This invention provides a metal laminate that maintains functionality such as radiation performance and is excellent in dimensional accuracy after press work. Such metal laminate is a roll-bonded laminate composed of 2 or more metal layers, which exhibits a ratio σ/T of the standard deviation σ of thickness T.sub.1 of the outermost layer to thickness T of the roll-bonded laminate of 0% of 4.0%, the thickness T of 2 mm or less, and the deviation of the thickness T of 4.0% or less.
TORSIONAL DAMPER AND METHOD OF WELDING PARTS HAVING DISSIMILAR MATERIALS
A method of joining first and second parts formed of dissimilar materials is provided. The first part defines a first part contacting surface having a frustoconical shape. The first and second parts are brought into contact with one another, with one of the first and second parts being rotated while the other remains stationary, so as to generate frictional heat between the contacting surfaces of the parts, the generated frictional heat producing softened adjacent regions in the first and second parts. A force is applied to the first and second parts to plastically deform the softened adjacent regions and to forge together the first and second parts to form a solid-state joint. A composite torsional damper hub assembly includes a steel stem and a damper hub welded to the stem at an interface. The damper hub is formed of aluminum or an aluminum alloy, and the interface is generally frustoconical.
