Eddy current monitoring in an additive manufacturing continuous welding system
An AM continuous welding system (AMCWS) is provided. The AMCWS includes a feedstock dispenser that configured to emit feedstock at a designated location, and a heat source configured to heat the feedstock. The AMCWS also includes a first eddy current sensor array that is configured to generate a first plurality of sensor signals while in current-sensing proximity of a re-solidified feedstock segment. A controller is coupled to the first eddy current sensor array and is configured to determine, based on the first plurality of sensor signals, a first characteristic of the re-solidified feedstock segment. The controller determines that the first characteristic is a first undesirable characteristic, and initiates an action based on the first undesirable characteristic.
TWO-COLOR HIGH SPEED THERMAL IMAGING SYSTEM FOR LASER-BASED ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING PROCESS MONITORING
Monitoring melt pool temperature in laser powder bed fusion by providing a build laser that produces a laser beam that is directed onto the melt pool and produces an incandescence that emanates from the melt pool, receiving the incandescence and producing a first image having a first spectral band and a second image having a second spectral band, and determining the ratio of said first image having a first spectral band and said second image having a second spectral band to monitor the melt pool temperature.
Adjustable beam characteristics
Disclosed herein are methods, apparatus, and systems for providing an optical beam delivery system, comprising an optical fiber including a first length of fiber comprising a first RIP formed to enable, at least in part, modification of one or more beam characteristics of an optical beam by a perturbation assembly arranged to modify the one or more beam characteristics, the perturbation assembly coupled to the first length of fiber or integral with the first length of fiber, or a combination thereof and a second length of fiber coupled to the first length of fiber and having a second RIP formed to preserve at least a portion of the one or more beam characteristics of the optical beam modified by the perturbation assembly within one or more first confinement regions. The optical beam delivery system may include an optical system coupled to the second length of fiber including one or more free-space optics configured to receive and transmit an optical beam comprising the modified one or more beam characteristics.

The first RIP may differ from the second RIP.
ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING WITH METAL WIRE
An additive manufacturing system includes an array of laser beams emanating from different directions and impinging upon a common focal spot. A feeder feeds a portion of a metal wire to the focal spot, and the laser beams combine to melt the portion of the metal wire to form a layer of metal on a support substrate. An actuator causes relative movement between the metal wire and the support substrate to create a 3D object from multiple layers of metal wire melted by the laser beams.
