LED SURFACE MODIFICATION WITH ULTRAVIOLET LASER
A laser light is used to modify the surface of the gallium semiconductor layer of an LED. The parameters of the laser are selected so that the laser interacts with the gallium semiconductor layer in a desired manner to yield the desired surface properties. For example, if a particular surface roughness is desired, the power of the laser light is selected so that the laser light penetrates the gallium semiconductor layer to a depth matching the desired surface roughness. The same principles can also be applied in a process that creates features such as trenches, pits, lenses, and mirrors on the gallium semiconductor layer of an LED. The laser projector is operated to irradiate a region of the gallium semiconductor layer to create a region of metallic gallium. The desired surface roughness and the different features can advantageously improve the beam collimation, light extraction, and other properties of the LED.
Super charger components
A pulley assembly having a body, a shaft mount and a plurality of bolts is disclosed. The body is aligned to the shaft mount by providing a tight tolerance between a shoulder portion of the bolt and a neck portion of a counter sunk hole formed in the body. Additionally, an outer surface of the body may have a pattern of friction lines or patches formed by fusing particulate matter to the outer surface with heat generated by a laser beam.
Earth-boring tools having cutting elements with cutting faces exhibiting multiple coefficients of friction, and related methods
An earth-boring tool having at least one cutting element with a multi-friction cutting face provides for the steering of formation cuttings as the cuttings slide across the cutting face. The multi-friction cutting element includes a diamond table bonded to a substrate of superabrasive material. The diamond table has a cutting face formed thereon with a cutting edge extending along a periphery of the cutting face. The cutting face has a first area having an average surface finish roughness less than an average surface finish roughness of a second area of the cutting face, the two areas separated by a boundary having a proximal end proximate a tool crown and a distal end remote from the tool crown.
ARTICLE COMPRISING A METAL SUBSTRATE AND A CHANNEL IN THE METAL SUBSTRATE AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING SAME
An article having a metal substrate and a channel in the metal substrate which is partly or completely open to the surface, wherein the cross section of the channel has a local width maximum (5) between the channel base (7) and the contact plane (1), measured parallel to the contact plane and at right angles to the longitudinal channel axis in the section perpendicular to the surface. (FIG. 1a)
PATTERN EDITOR FOR GENERATING FUNCTIONAL TEXTURES
A computer-implemented method for generating laser engraving instructions for performing a patterning process on a workpiece surface includes receiving a first input value indicating a first laser-pulse pattern and a second input value for a laser parameter associated with a laser-engraving system; and generating a machine-command sequence for the laser-engraving system based on the first input value and the second input value.
Laser-based lap welding of sheet metal components using laser induced protuberances to control gap
A method for laser welding first and second components is provided including moving a laser beam across a portion of a surface of the first component at a speed sufficient to generate protuberances on the surface of the first component by means of a humping effect, juxtaposing said first and second components such that opposed surfaces of the first and second components are separated by said protuberances on the surface of the first component, and laser welding said first and second components by scanning the laser beam in a region in which said surfaces are separated by said protuberances. The height of the protuberances can be controlled by controlling a scanning speed of the laser beam.
METAL MEMBER AND MANUFACTURING METHOD FOR METAL MEMBER
A manufacturing method for a metal member includes irradiating a first region of a surface of the base material, the surface having at least any one of Cu, Al, Sn, Ti, and Fe, as a main component, with a laser beam to melt the first region; generating metal particles from a vapor or plasma of a metal released to a predetermined atmosphere by melting the surface of the base material in the first region, and depositing the metal particles in the first region; irradiating a second region adjacent to the first region with a laser beam to melt the second region; and generating metal particles from a vapor or plasma of a metal released to a predetermined atmosphere by melting the surface of the base material in the second region, and depositing the metal particles in each of the first region and the second region.

An interference fit fastener (FIG. 1) and method of fabricating same is described.
Method for forming three-dimensional anchoring structures on a surface
A method for forming three-dimensional anchoring structures on a surface is provided. This may result in a thermal barrier coating system exhibiting enhanced adherence for its constituent coatings. The method involves applying a laser beam (10) to a surface (12) of a solid material (14) to form a liquefied bed (16) on the surface of the solid material, then applying a pulse of laser energy (18) to a portion of the liquefied bed to cause a disturbance, such as a splash (20) or a wave (25) of liquefied material outside the liquefied bed. A three-dimensional anchoring structure (22) may thus be formed on the surface upon solidification of the splash or wave of liquefied material.
