A turf aerator includes a frame, a tine crank having a clearing end with threads, a plurality of tines coupled to the tine crank, and a coupling for fastening the tine crank clearing end to the frame. The coupling includes a collar area for receiving the tine crank clearing end, an anchor plate for selectively fastening to the frame, and an opening sized for accessing the threads of the tine crank clearing end. The turf aerator further includes an actuator threaded complementary to the threads of the tine crank clearing end for selectively moving the coupling from an extended position relative to the tine crank to a retracted position relative to the tine crank.

A below-grade smart irrigation object includes: an input signal portion configured to receive an energizing signal for the below-grade smart irrigation object; an output signal portion configured to indicate the location of the below-grade smart irrigation object in response to receiving the energizing signal; and an irrigation portion configured to effectuate an irrigation operation.

A handheld gardening tool includes a power source, a spike projection device adapted to roughen soil for the application of grass seeds or to ease pulling weeds, and a support arm connecting the power source to the spike projection device. The spike projection device comprises a housing supporting a plurality of spikes mounted within the housing for controlled extension from and retraction within the housing for engagement with soil.

A turf maintenance machine includes: a moveable platform configured to move the turf maintenance machine within an area to be maintained; a wireless transmitter system configured to provide a wireless energizing signal to a below-grade smart irrigation object; and a turf aeration system configured to aerate turf within the area to be maintained.

A below-grade smart irrigation object includes: an input signal portion configured to receive an energizing signal for the below-grade smart irrigation object; an output signal portion configured to indicate the location of the below-grade smart irrigation object in response to receiving the energizing signal; and an irrigation portion configured to effectuate an irrigation operation.

A smart tine assembly includes: a tine configured to aerate turf; and a damage sensing system configured to: sense when the tine is damaged, and generate a damaged tine signal.

A turf maintenance machine includes: a moveable platform configured to move the turf maintenance machine within an area to be maintained, wherein the area to be maintained includes a plurality of below-grade smart irrigation objects; a locating system configured to determine if the turf maintenance machine is proximate one of the plurality of below-grade smart irrigation objects; and a turf aeration system configured to aerate turf within the area to be maintained.

A turf aerator is configured with components that allow a user to set a desired turf aeration depth and then automatically adjust hydraulic pressure to produce a proper level of downward pressure into the ground in order to maintain consistent depth penetration with the tines. The turf aerator implements a depth control lever that is operatively connected to a switch that increases or decreases tine depth up or down. Since the desired tine depth is set and the hydraulic pressure is capable of puncturing the ground accordingly, portions of the ground that are relatively harder or softer are still properly penetrated due to the set level of depth. The turf aerator is also configured with a tine housing which shields drive chains from dirt and debris from the aerating, thereby increasing the life of the drive chains.
