Methods and Apparatus for Aerating Turf

A turf aerator is disclosed which is configured with components that allow a user to set a desired turf aeration depth and then automatically adjust hydraulic pressure to produce a proper level of downward pressure into the ground in order to maintain consistent depth penetration with the tines. The turf aerator implements a depth control lever that is operatively connected to a switch that increases or decreases tine depth up or down. Since the desired tine depth is set and the hydraulic pressure is capable of puncturing the ground accordingly, portions of the ground that are relatively harder or softer are still properly penetrated due to the set level of depth. The turf aerator is also configured with a tine housing which shields drive chains from dirt and debris from the aerating, thereby increasing the life of the drive chains.

An aerator tine holder includes a clamp block removably attached to a base. Each of the clamp block and the base have a plurality of semicylindrical channels that when attached together form a plurality of cylindrical bores holding cylindrical tines. One or more magnets in the base and/or clamp block may be used to position the tines while the clamp block is removed from the base.

A walk behind power equipment device includes a frame (or housing), an engine supported at least in part by the frame or housing, a mobility assembly operably coupled to the frame and to the engine to provide mobility of the walk behind power equipment device responsive to operation of the engine, a working assembly and a handle assembly. The working assembly is operably coupled to the frame and to the engine to facilitate performance of a working function of the walk behind power equipment device responsive to operation of the engine. The handle assembly is operably coupled to the frame via a handle coupler to provide steering inputs responsive to which the mobility assembly moves the walk behind power equipment device via a handle apparatus of the handle assembly. The handle coupler is configured to provide at least vibration isolation and handle apparatus orientation adjustment.

Turf aerators and assemblies for same

A turf aerator includes a frame, a tine shaft rotatably supported by the frame, a plurality of tines coupled to the tine shaft, a swing arm supporting the plurality of tines, and an input. The swing arm being rotatably supported by the frame and configured to rotate the plurality of tines between an operating position and a retracted position. Actuation of the input (i) actuates the swing arm to transition the plurality of tines from the retracted position to the operating position and (ii) activates the tine shaft to move the plurality of tines.

A core collector for collecting aeration cores lifted from a ground surface by a ground aerator machine includes a skid plate having a bottom surface opposite the ground surface and a top surface opposite the bottom surface. The skid plate has a plurality of openings in the skid plate extending between the top surface and the bottom surface at a proximal end of the skid plate. The plurality of openings are spaced apart from each other based on a spacing of extraction tines of the ground aerator machine. The core collector has at least one core clearing member. Aeration cores are deposited directly onto the top surface of the skid plate. The at least one core clearing member is configured to clear the aeration cores from the proximal end of the skid plate toward the distal end of the skid plate.

A metal implement such as an aeration tine formed from a hardened carbide tip affixed to a steel tine body is disclosed. The tine exterior surface is treated, such as by diffusion, with a hardening agent like aluminum-titanium-nitride and heating the tine to produce an implement that defines a hardness rating in excess of eight thousand (8,000) Vickers. The tip is attached to the body to form a tine. A method of manufacturing a tipped metal implement including the steps of providing a metal body and a hardened tip, treating substantially all of the body with a hardening agent, heating the body, and affixing the tip to an end of the metal body to form an implement that defines a hardness rating in excess of eight thousand (8,000) Vickers.
