ANVIL ROLL AND DIE CUTTER SYSTEMS AND METHODS

In some embodiments, a roll for use in a rotary manufacturing system includes a cylindrical contact section that extends along a roll axis and may include a contact surface, an end face, a channel section, and a core section may have a core wall and a core shaft. The channel section may include a first wall and a channel shaft, and the channel section may define a channel between the first wall and the channel shaft that encircles the channel shaft and the roll axis. The channel may have an inner face, an outer face, and a channel end. The channel section and the core section may be attached to each other.

Workpiece machining apparatus

A pressure plate 12 has an upper surface 12a and a lower surface 12b. A blade die unit 16 for machining a workpiece by applying a pressure to a principal surface of the workpiece is arranged on the lower surface 12b. A face plate 24 has an upper surface 24a and a lower surface 24b, and is arranged such that the upper surface 24a faces the lower surface 12b with the blade die unit 16 interposed therebetween. An upper pressure roller 20 applies a pressure directed from the upper surface 12a side toward the lower surface 12b side of the pressure plate 12 to a portion of the upper surface 12a. A lower pressure roller 22 applies a pressure directed from the lower surface 24b side toward the upper surface 24a side of the face plate 24 to a portion of the lower surface 24b. A motor changes a portion that the upper pressure roller 20 pressurizes, and also, a portion that the lower pressure roller 22 pressurizes is changed such that the portion that the lower pressure roller 22 pressurizes is aligned with the portion that the upper pressure roller 20 pressurizes when viewed from a direction crossing the lower surface 24b.

Compliant anvil

An anvil roll is configured to operatively engage with a tooling agent. The anvil includes an outer surface, an opposing surface opposite the outer surface and an inner surface. One or more spring elements are disposed between the opposing surface and the inner surface. The springs provide a compliance to the anvil.

A portable crafting tool, which may be readily transported from one location to another and placed on a tabletop or another suitable surface for use, and which includes rollers for applying pressure to a craft assembly, is disclosed. The craft assembly may include a platform with a tool, such as a cutting die, an embossing tool and/or a letterpress tool, a sheet of a medium (e.g., paper, vellum, acetate, foil, etc.) that is to be modified (as pressure is applied to the craft assembly) and a mat or a cover for positioning over the sheet of medium and the tool. The portable crafting tool may include a gap spacer, which adjusts a distance that the rollers are spaced apart from one another. The portable crafting tool may be configured for selective operation with a manually operated handle or with a motor that may be used in place of the handle. The portable crafting tool may be configured to engage a surface when it is deployed on the surface.

A rotary cutter unit includes: a cutter roll; an anvil roll parallel to the cutter roll; two pairs of rotatably-supporting portions, each pair disposed at respective opposite ends of each of the two rolls; a pair of air springs each installed to apply pressure to a respective one of the pair of rotatably-supporting portions of one roll; and a pair of spring elements each installed to apply pressure to a respective one of the pair of rotatably-supporting portions of the other roll, in a direction opposed to the pressure application of the air springs. The air springs and spring elements apply pressures to respective corresponding ones of the pairs of rotatably-supporting portions, in opposite directions sandwiching the two rolls. Each rotatably-supporting portion is slidable in directions which cause pressure applied from a corresponding one of the pair of air springs and the pair of spring elements to increase and decrease.
