CONTROL SYSTEM FOR MACRO ADJUSTMENT OF A POLYMERIC MELT FORMING SLOT TYPE DIE
A system for adjusting a gap in a slot die for producing a polymeric web. The system includes a slot die that has a polymer reservoir that extends between a polymer inlet and a melt outlet. The melt outlet has a first edge and a second edge that each extend longitudinally along the melt outlet. The second edge is opposite the first edge. A plurality of actuators move the second edge along a plurality of positions along a length of the second edge. The first edge is spaced apart from the second edge by a gap that has an adjustable profile. A pressure sensor communicates with the reservoir and measures the pressure of the polymer in the reservoir. A control unit with an algorithm correlates the profile of the gap to the pressure in the reservoir. The algorithm is configured to generate control signals to cause the profile of the gap to be uniform.

An extruding system includes a melting unit configured to convey a polymeric material, a mixing unit configured to mix the polymeric material with a blowing agent to form a mixture, an injection unit configured to inject the mixture, a first flow control element disposed between the melting unit and the mixing unit, and a second flow control element disposed between the mixing unit and the injection unit. A method of extruding includes conveying a polymeric material from a melting unit to a mixing unit, conveying a blowing agent into the mixing unit, mixing the polymeric material with the blowing agent to form a mixture, conveying the mixture from the mixing unit to an injection unit, and discharging the mixture from the injection unit, wherein flow of the polymeric material is controlled by a first flow control element, and flow of the mixture is controlled by a second flow control element.
METHOD FOR EXTRUDING A SEMI-FINISHED PRODUCT MADE OF ELASTOMERIC MATERIAL
A method for extruding a semi-finished product made of elastomeric material. An elastomeric material is fed to an inlet channel of a gear pump with an inlet pressure value and dispensed through an exit channel of the gear pump with an exit pressure value greater than the inlet pressure value. The method detects the exit pressure value and adjusts the operation of the gear pump to maintain a predetermined pressure difference between the exit pressure and the inlet pressure based on the detection of the exit pressure value.
PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR BUILDING TYRES FOR VEHICLE WHEELS AND TYRES OBTAINABLE THEREFROM
In a process for building tyres for vehicle wheels, at least one tread band (9) or other elastomeric component of a tyre (2) is made by applying at least one continuous elongated element (14) according to a plurality of turns (C) around a forming drum (15) rotating around a geometric rotation axis (X) thereof. The continuous elongated element (14) is made by the action of extruding a first material through an extrusion nozzle (16), to form an inner core (33) of said continuous elongated element (14) exiting from an outlet opening (18) of the extrusion nozzle (16). During the extrusion, a second material different from the first material is conveyed around the first material, at the extrusion nozzle (16) and upstream of the outlet opening (18), to form a coating layer (32) which entirely surrounds the inner core (33).

Systems and methods for manufacturing bulked continuous filament
Systems for manufacturing bulked continuous carpet filament from polymer, where the systems are configured for: (1) melting polymer (e.g., derived from post-consumer PET bottles) to create a first single stream of polymer melt; (2) separating the first single stream of polymer melt into multiple streams of polymer melt; (3) exposing the multiple streams of polymer melt to a pressure of between about 0 millibars and about 5 millibars; (4) allowing the multiple streams of polymer melt to fall into a receiving section of a melt processing unit; (5) recombining the multiple streams of polymer melt into a second single stream of polymer melt; and (6) providing the second single stream of polymer melt to one or more spinning machines that are configured to form the second single stream of polymer melt into bulked continuous carpet filament.
Ram extruding thin panels of UHMW polymers
A ram extrusion apparatus including a die having several thermal zones, a hopper for introducing a granular polymer resin to the die, and a ram for moving the granular polymer resin through the thermal zones of the die and out from an outlet end thereof at a temperature above the crystalline melt temperature of the polymer resin. The hopper may be designed to deliver the polymer resin into a resin inlet of the die in a plurality of specifically metered amounts which may vary across a width of the resin inlet end of the die. The apparatus may further include one or more finishing tables positioned after the outlet end of the die for receiving and moving the extruded resin away from the outlet end of the die so that there is no backpressure on the extruded resin, and which provide compression force and even cooling to the extruded resin.

A feeder for an extruder includes a feed flow passage extending in an axial direction from a feeder inlet to a feeder outlet, and an axially extending rotatable screw provided in the feed flow passage. Rotation of the screw draws a feedstock in a direction of flow to the feeder outlet. The feeder inlet has an inlet passage that overlies the screw. The inlet passage has a width in a plane transverse to the axial direction, and the width decreases in the direction of flow.
