Control of solidification in laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing using a diode laser fiber array

A method of method of forming or repairing a superalloy article having a columnar or equiaxed or directionally solidified or amorphous or single crystal microstructure includes emitting a plurality of laser beams from selected fibers of a diode laser fiber array corresponding to a pattern of a layer of the article onto a powder bed of the superalloy to form a melt pool; and controlling a temperature gradient and a solidification velocity of the melt pool to form the columnar or single crystal microstructure.

Bag With Coloured Sheet For Repairing Composite Panels, And Colouration And Repair Method

An assembly includes a bag and of a composite panel exhibiting a damaged region to be repaired by polymerization of a repair piece using the bag. The bag includes a sheet intended to be laid over the panel. When the panel and the sheet are laid one atop of the other, the sheet exhibits regions capable of absorbing heat emitted by radiation onto it in a proportion that is dependent on the polymerization temperature needed for that region of the panel that corresponds to it, the radiation being partially absorbed by suitable colouration of the sheet in the region concerned. Determining those regions of the panel in which radiation is less well absorbed than in others means that the heating can be adapted to suit the needs of polymerization in terms of repair and that even polymerization can thus be obtained over the entire damaged region, thereby consolidating the repair.

Applicator repair for additive manufacturing system

An applicator repair system for an additive manufacturing (AM) system, and an AM system including the same are disclosed. The applicator repair system includes a repair device including a repair element configured to repair a damaged applicator element on an applicator of an AM system. The damaged applicator element is configured to distribute a layer of raw material on a build platform of the AM system. The repair device is positioned within a processing chamber of the AM system. A damaged applicator controller may be provided that is configured to cause repair of the damaged active applicator in response to the damaged applicator being identified as damaged.

Assembly and Method to Repair Thermoplastic Composites

An assembly to repair a thermoplastic composite. The assembly includes a heating device positioned on opposing sides of the thermoplastic composite. The heating device includes one or more susceptor with a Curie temperature to heat the thermoplastic composite. A pressure device applies a compressive force to the heating device. A pressure distribution device is positioned between the heating device and the thermoplastic composite. The pressure distribution device distributes the compressive force from the pressure device over areas of the opposing sides of thermoplastic composite.

Near-field microwave heating system and method

A microwave heating device includes a variable frequency microwave power supply, a waveguide launcher, and a fixture to contain a material to be heated, with the fixture located directly adjacent to the end of the launcher. All heating occurs in the near-field region. This condition may be insured by keeping the thickness of the fixture or workpiece under one wavelength (at all microwave frequencies being used). The launcher is preferably a horn or waveguide configured to apply the microwave power to a small area to perform spot curing or repair operations involving adhesives and composites. The spot curing may secure components in place for further handling, after which a thermal or oven treatment will cure the remaining adhesive to develop adequate strength for service.
