Print on demand heat blanket system
A method including receiving a model of a composite structure having an inconsistency. The model includes a pre-calculated heating model that specifies areas of the inconsistency for which corresponding different amounts of heating are applied to an uncured composite material that is applied to the inconsistency. A design for heating elements of varying density across the areas is generated from the model. The design is configured to cause the heating elements in a first sub-area of a heat blanket system to generate a first amount of heat in a third area in the areas, and to cause the heating elements in a second sub-area of the heat blanket system to generate a second, different amount of heat in a fourth area of the areas. The heating elements are printed according to the design on a blanket to manufacture the heat blanket system.
Automated system and method for preparing a mandrel for use in composite stringer manufacturing
A system includes a U-shaped chute, one or more feeder mechanisms, a sock application assembly, and a film application assembly. The chute has a chute inlet and a chute outlet and is configured to receive a mandrel having a mandrel length. The one or more feeder mechanisms are configured to move the mandrel into the chute inlet and through the chute. The sock application assembly has a sock material spool containing a breather sock in tubular form. The sock application assembly is configured to progressively apply the breather sock over the mandrel length as the mandrel exits the chute outlet. The film application assembly has a film material spool containing a film in tubular form. The film application assembly is configured to progressively apply the film over the breather sock covering the mandrel exiting the sock application assembly to thereby form a film-sock-mandrel assembly.
Bonding tool for aircraft structural parts
A bonding tool is described that is used to secure sacrificial pads to bonding locations on a perimeter of a rib during a bonding process. In one embodiment, the bonding tool includes a base member having a rib receptacle dimensioned to receive a rib of a wing, a plurality of compression forms disposed around at least a portion of the rib receptacle and proximate to a perimeter of the rib, where the compression forms include a plurality of sacrificial pads that face towards bonding locations on the perimeter of the rib, and at least one bladder proximate to the compression forms that expands between a wall of the base member and the compression forms to press the sacrificial pads against the bonding locations while the sacrificial pads bond to the bonding locations.
APPARATUS AND METHOD TO TAILOR FIBER DISTORTION IN COMPOSITE PARTS
A method for positioning wrinkling of a cured composite material at a predetermined location in fabricating a composite part, which includes positioning a caul plate in contact with an uncured composite material. The uncured composite material has a geometric change in shape and the caul plate has a first slit which extends through and along the caul plate. The method further includes positioning a fiber and a resin of a portion of the uncured composite material within the first slit and curing the uncured composite material positioning a wrinkle within the first slit of the caul plate.
Aircraft stringers having CFRP material reinforced flanges
Aircraft stringers having carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) material reinforced flanges are disclosed. An example stringer to be coupled to a skin of an aircraft comprises a flange. The flange includes a first portion of a first stiffening segment. The flange further includes a first portion of a second stiffening segment coupled to the first portion of the first stiffening segment. The flange further includes a CFRP reinforcement segment coupled to the first portion of the first stiffening segment and to the first portion of the second stiffening segment. The CFRP reinforcement segment strengthens the first portion of the first stiffening segment and the first portion of the second stiffening segment.
THERMOPLASTIC COMPOSITE INDUCTION WELDING TOOLING FOR RIBS
A thermoplastic welding assembly and method for joining a plurality of thermoplastic support components to a thermoplastic component is provided. The thermoplastic welding assembly includes a frame, a plurality of heat sinks, and a plurality of individually actuatable pressurizers. The frame includes a plurality of welding slots. Each heat sink of the plurality of heat sinks is positioned within one of the welding slots. Each pressurizer of the plurality of individually actuatable pressurizers includes an alignment actuator configured to move one thermoplastic support component into alignment with one welding slot, and a clamping actuator configured to move the one thermoplastic support component into contact with the thermoplastic component. In some implementations, the thermoplastic welding assembly further includes a plurality of actuators configured to move the alignment actuator and the clamping actuator.
PRINT ON DEMAND HEAT BLANKET SYSTEM
A heat blanket system including a blanket including a first sub-area and a second sub-area. The heat blanket system also includes heating elements printed on the blanket. First spacings between first ones of the heating elements in the first sub-area varies relative to second spacings between second ones of the heating elements in the second sub-area. The first spacings and the second spacings vary according to a design. The design is configured for use on a uniquely defined rework area on a uniquely defined composite material object including a third area including a heat sink region and a fourth area including a non-heat sink region. The first sub-area is sized and dimensioned to be placed over the third area. The second sub-area is sized and dimensioned to be placed over the fourth area.
DEVICE COMPRISING MULTIPLE LONGITUDINAL MANDRELS FORMING A MOLD FOR MANUFACTURING A COMPOSITE PART
A device and a process for manufacturing a composite part, the device comprising four molding mandrels that can be arranged in a mold arrangement in which they form a mold for the composite part, as well as a locking mandrel configured to lock the molding mandrels in the mold arrangement and to be extracted from between the molding mandrels to release the molding mandrels from their mold arrangement. The locking mandrel extends from one longitudinal end of the molding mandrels to another opposite longitudinal end of the molding mandrels.
AIRCRAFT COMPRISING COMPOSITE STRUCTURAL COMPONENT, AND METHOD FOR FORMING COMPOSITE STRUCTURAL COMPONENT
A method for fabricating a composite wing structural component for an aircraft is described. The method comprises extruding a filler material into each mold channel of a plurality of mold channels of a die to form a plurality of filler segments, removing the plurality of filler segments from the plurality of mold channels of the die, and arranging the plurality of filler segments in a space in the composite structural component, the space being defined by a radius of the composite structural component, such that the filler segments are in end-to-end contact. The method further comprises curing the plurality of filler segments in the space to fuse the plurality of filler segments.
