An improved extraction tube may also be provided to facilitate separation and removal of organics and other liquids from the compressed material. At least one sensor may be provided for sensing an increasing accumulation of waste material awaiting to be processed. An exemplary embodiment may also be adapted to add dry fraction to a waste load that is wet with organics or other liquids to improve compressibility. A system and method may also be adapted to automatically adjust to improve compression of the material and facilitate more efficient production.

The invention relates to a screw press apparatus (1) comprising an outer casing (2) surrounding a screening tube (6a) with a plurality of liquid discharge holes, a slurry inlet port (3) at one end of the screening tube and a solids discharge port (4) at an opposite end of the screening tube, the screening tube housing an axially located auger (5), the outer casing (2) having a first opening in fluid communication with the slurry inlet port (3), a second opening in fluid communication with the solids discharge port (4), and a third opening (8) in fluid communication with the liquid discharge holes of the screening tube (6), a cleaning device (20) located between the outer casing and the screening tube, a device (10) for axially moving the cleaning device. The cleaning device (20) has a rigid co-axial liquid supply pipe (30) having at least one washing pipe (21, 22, 23, 24) at least partially surrounding the screening tube (6), each at least one washing pipe (21, 22, 23, 24) containing a plurality of nozzles (211, 221, 231, 241) facing the screening tube (6a). The screw press apparatus is especially suited for processing protein containing slurries, and in another aspect the invention relates to a method of producing a gluten product using the screw press apparatus.

Dewatering systems and methods

A dewatering system for removing solids from an influent includes a filtration assembly and a feed pipe upstream thereof. The dewatering system includes a solids receptacle downstream of the filtration assembly, and an effluent collector adjacent to the filtration assembly and in fluid communication with the filtration assembly. The dewatering system includes a sensor to sense a characteristic of an influent, an effluent and/or a solid. A control system is operatively connected to the sensor to receive a sensor signal therefrom and to generate an adjustment signal based on the sensor signal to improve the efficiency of the dewatering system.

A method for removing liquid from a slurry includes: (i) feeding the slurry into the inlet of a press; (ii) removing liquid from the slurry as the slurry advances through a deliquifying section of the press, thereby producing a pressate stream; (iii) forming a plug of material as the slurry is advanced through a plug formation section of the press; (iv) advancing the plug of material to a discharge section of the press; and (v) removing additional liquid from the plug of material by operating the press so that the pressure in the discharge section of the press is greater than the pressure of the pressate stream by at least 2 psi. The present invention also relates to a method for controlling discharge consistency from a press, without provision of discharge restrictors, by varying the pressure differential between a discharge section of the press and a pressate stream.
