A material for reducing exposure to ionizing radiation. One exemplary embodiment comprises a felt layer; a foil layer; a first adhesive film layer disposed between the outer felt layer and the foil layer; a radiation shield layer; a second adhesive film layer disposed between the foil layer and radiation shield layer; and a foam layer disposed on the surface of the radiation shield layer opposite the second adhesive film layer. The material may be installed in commercial aircraft, corporate aircraft, flight suits, helmets, military uniforms, rotary aircraft, spacecraft, and the like. For example, the material disclosed herein may be provided as a headliner in an aircraft, or alternatively may be used to line the entire interior of an aircraft. In one or more embodiments, the material may be secured to a surface using a hook and loop attachment mechanism.

The thermoplastic surfacer includes a broadgood having an amorphous thermoplastic resin, one or more fillers embedded into the broadgood, and a lightning strike protection mesh or foil embedded into the broadgood. When applying the surfacer to a composite part of an aircraft, the method includes draping the surfacer on an at least partially unconsolidated composite part, consolidating the at least partially unconsolidated composite part by heating the part to a temperature at or above a melt temperature of a resins used in the part and in the surfacer, and filling at least one surface defect in the consolidated part using the amorphous thermoplastic polymer resin and milled fibers provided in the thermoplastic surfacer.

A sound absorbing multi-layer composite for a vehicle that reduces sounds along an acoustic path is configured with a non-foam polymeric layer and a face layer for dissipating sound energy. Also, the face layer may be made of a nonwoven polymer comprising at least 60% of a polyamide containing an aliphatic diamine having 6 or more carbon atoms and an aliphatic diacid having 6 or more carbon atoms. The weighted overall average fiber diameter of the composite is from 2 microns to 25 microns.

Shielding articles are disclosed. One shielding article includes a fire retardancy element/fire propagation reduction element, which includes a pair of flexible graphite outer layers and a core, where the flexible graphite outer layers are on opposing sides of the core. The core may include one or more fire retardant elements or insulation materials. Also disclosed are battery packs that include the shielding articles. The shielding articles can be applied in any system that reduced fire propagation would be desirable.
