A selectively switchable dual rate vehicle suspension system comprising a pushrod actuated inboard spring configuration, conventionally oriented between the unsprung mass and the sprung mass of one corner of the vehicle, comprising a torsion bar spring of a first predetermined rate, K1, and a coil spring of a second predetermined rate, K2, arranged in series so as to provide a total combined spring rate KT. A lockout actuator is arranged in parallel with the coil spring and configured so that in a first mode it allows the coil spring to move freely and in a second mode prevents motion of the coil spring such that when the lockout actuator is in a first, unlocked, mode the overall vehicle suspension spring rate is defined by the series equation 1/KT=1/K1+1/K2, and when the lockout actuator is in a second, locked, mode the overall vehicle suspension spring rate is substantially higher as defined by KT=K1, thus selectively providing both a low rate, optimal ride comfort setting and a high rate, optimal handling setting.

At least one first attachment for receiving the first hydraulic connection is provided along the collared shoulder, the first attachment, being arranged on the collared shoulder tangentially to the longitudinal axis of the level control cylinder or of the level control piston such that at least one tangential external fluid connection on the collared shoulder can be connected to the at least one first hydraulic connection.

The intermediate oil chamber and the intermediate gas chamber are partitioned by a diaphragm. The intermediate unit has a capacity adjustment mechanism including a movable portion of which the position can be changed. The capacity adjustment mechanism adjusts the capacity of the intermediate gas chamber by changing the position of the movable portion.

A vehicle suspension connects a vehicle body to a plurality of wheels and allows relative motion between the vehicle body and the wheels. The suspension system includes a plurality of telescoping multi-stage hydraulic cylinder assemblies arranged to selectively lift the vehicle body relative to the wheels when extended and to lower the vehicle body relative to the wheels when contracted. A control valve is used to adjust a volume of hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic cylinder assemblies to change a height of the vehicle. External spring packs are in fluid connection with the hydraulic cylinder assemblies to maintain spring forces on the suspension system over a range of telescopic movement of the hydraulic cylinder assemblies. Fluid damping valves are provided for damping telescopic movement of the hydraulic cylinder assemblies by restricting fluid flow between the hydraulic cylinder assemblies and the spring packs.

INDEPENDENT AND CROSS-LINKED HYDRAULIC ACTUATOR SYSTEMS

Apparatus and methods are described where multiple linear and/or rotary actuators operate cooperatively in, for example, cross-linked arrangements to control the motion of sprung and unsprung masses in a vehicle. The actuators may include linear primary suspension actuators, spring perch actuators and/or rotary roll-bar actuators that, in some operating modes, are driven directly or indirectly by one or more hydraulic machines.

VEHICLE HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT DEVICE

A vehicle height adjustment device includes a rear suspension, an electromagnetic valve control unit, and a weight estimation unit. The rear suspension includes a support member. The electromagnetic valve control unit determines a target movement based on an interrelation between the target movement and a weight applied to a vehicle, under which the target movement is set to an upper limit when the weight is larger than a predetermined weight, so that an actual movement of the support member reaches the target movement. The electromagnetic valve control unit determines the target movement based on a temporary weight. The weight estimation unit increases the temporary weight, even when the actual movement reached the target movement. The electromagnetic valve control unit decreases the target length, even when the temporary weight increased. The weight estimation unit estimates as the weight the temporary weight when the actual length has finally reached the target length.
