10687474 · 2020-06-23 ·

A method and apparatus for cultivating vegetation at an arid location includes rooting immature vegetation in a mat combined with a super absorbent polymer (SAP) and, in embodiments, fertilizer, sand, and/or soil; placing the mat at the arid location; covering the mat with a perforated, transparent or semi-transparent cover; collecting urine in a water purification system; and providing purified water extracted from the urine to the mat. A water barrier can be placed below the mat. The cover can be placed on or suspended above the mat. SAP, seeds, and/or additional water barriers can be placed between mats in a stack. The opacity of the cover can be increased to emulate shade from natural vegetation. A water distribution system can be included for continued support of the vegetation, and can include a water reservoir and/or at least one solar still.

SEEDING FORMULATION FOR WOODY PLANTS AND PRE-TREATMENT OF LAND SURFACES

The present disclosure provides a seeding formulation for woody plants and a pre-treatment of surfaces (e.g. rocks, waste rocks, tailings, overburden) on disturbed and degraded lands. The seeding formulation includes a mix of woody trees or shrubs seeds, organic mulch, beneficial microbial populations, mineral fertilizer, adhesive, absorbent polymer, and water. The pre-treatment of surfaces refers to the spreading or mixing of surfaces with organic biomass. Methods of preparing and applying the seeding formulation and pre-treatment are also disclosed. The formulation is used for the phytoremediation, ecological restoration, land reclamation, environmental rehabilitation, revitalization, revegetation, and reforestation of disturbed and degraded lands.

Adhesive membrane used to preserve the fresh cut characteristics of a christmas tree base
10638671 · 2020-05-05 · ·

A membrane for covering the cut end of a tree trunk to prevent the tree from creating a seal after it has been cut. The membrane is attachable to the cut end surface of the tree trunk and includes a hydrating layer comprising a hydrogel. The hydrogel, made up primarily of water, adheres to the cut end surface of the tree trunk to continue hydrating the tree, and prevents air from reaching the tree's exposed transport tissue. In some embodiments, the membrane includes a backing layer and a release layer on opposite sides of the hydrating layer.

Tree or plant protection mat

There is provided a water-absorbent resin that exhibits both high water absorbency and high water-discharge capacity. The water-absorbent resin of the present invention is a water-absorbent resin comprising a polymer of a water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer, wherein when a cross-sectional image of the water-absorbent resin is observed using X-ray computed tomography, the water-absorbent resin has a ratio of the area of cavity portions (cavity area ratio) in the cross-sectional image of 5% or more, as calculated according to Equation (I):

cavity area ratio [%]={total cross-sectional area of cavity portions (B) in the water-absorbent resin/(total cross-sectional area of resin portions (A) in the water-absorbent resin+total cross-sectional area of cavity portions (B) in the water-absorbent resin)}100(I).

A planting device includes an outer shell and an inner shell. The outer shell has a closed first cavity therein. The inner shell is disposed in the first cavity. The inner shell is formed with a second cavity having an opening. The second cavity is filled with soil. Plant seeds are placed in the soil. The opening of the second cavity is sealed with a first water-permeable layer. A side wall of the first cavity, opposite the opening of the second cavity, is a seepage layer. A retaining wall is provided around an outer side of the seepage layer to form a water storage trough. A method for manufacturing the planting device is provided. The planting device enables plants to grow out of the shell from a closed cavity, reducing the soil pollution to the environment and the impact on human health. It is convenient for planting, just watering.
