An HUD includes a housing that accommodates a light modulation unit that spatially modulates light emitted by a light source; a projection optical system that is accommodated in the housing and projects the light that has been spatially modulated onto a windshield of a vehicle 1 through an opening portion of the housing; a cover that closes the opening portion; a protection member that is movable and is for protecting the cover; a driving unit that drives the protection member; and an object detecting unit that detects an object approaching a front surface of the cover. The driving unit moves the protection member to a position above the cover and causes the protection member to cover the cover when the object detecting unit detects an object, and the driving unit leaves the protection member retracted from the position above the cover to expose the cover when the object detecting unit does not detect an object.

A position in a left-right direction of a display position of a facility figure representing a facility is set to a position overlapping with a virtual line parallel to a traveling lane as viewed from a driver (c). A position in an up-down direction of the display position is determined to be a position overlapping with a road surface on the front side, the position separated upward by H1 from a lower end of a display area of a heads-up display when a distance L from a current position CP to a position TP of a facility is a distance ThL (b1), to be a position separated by H4 (H4<h1) when the distance L is zero, and such that distances H2 and H3 separated upward from the lower end of the display area gradually change from the distance H1 to the distance H4 as the distance L decreases from the distance ThL to zero (b2 and b3). The distance H1 is set such that the facility figure is displayed below a point facing the facility on the road surface on the front side when the distance L is the distance ThL.

Vehicle tachometer display

A vehicle controller determines likelihood of downshifting, such as by detecting braking and clutch disengagement. In response, the vehicle controller determines a desired angular velocity for the engine for a gear lower than a current gear. A tachometer display is updated to indicate the current angular velocity of the engine and the desired angular velocity. A difference between current and desired angular velocities is determined and fill in a region of the tachometer display, such as a sector between needles indicating current and desired angular velocities or most or all of a surface of the tachometer. The tachometer may be updated in the same manner according to a desired angular velocity in cases where the drive shifts into gear following coasting in neutral.

A display device configured to project a display image including at least any one of a first image or a second image is provided. A horizontal direction of the first image is longer than a vertical direction thereof. A vertical direction of the second image is longer than a horizontal direction thereof. The display device includes: a controller configured to generate a display image obtained by changing a width of at least any one of the first image or the second image in accordance with a deviation amount between the display image and a ghost image, the ghost image being visually recognized so as to deviate in a deviation direction with respect to the display image; and an image display configured to emit display light for projecting the display image generated by the controller.

Optical system and a method for operating an HUD

Described is an optical system and method for operating an HUD. The optical system includes an imaging system that generates optical radiation based on image information, a display system that projects the optical radiation, a deflection device that deflects the projected optical radiation, and at least one optically transparent pane-shaped element that at least partially reflects the deflected optical radiation. The deflection device guides the projected optical radiation onto the pane-shaped element, the optical radiation hitting the pane-shaped element at an angle. The imaging system, the display system, the deflection device and the pane-shaped element are arranged to generate a virtual image of optical radiation containing the image information. The optical system includes first and second edge points of the pane-shaped element. The first edge point has a minimal distance (d.sub.min.sup.(1)) to the deflection device and the second edge point has a minimal distance (d.sub.min.sup.(2)) to the imaging system.

Methods and vehicle interfaces are provided. One example method includes receiving, by a cloud processing service, data from a vehicle over a wireless network. The data includes information usable to identify a user account. The user account is accessible by one or more processing entities of the cloud processing service to identify a profile of a user. The profile of the user includes preferences of the user for the vehicle and learned behavior data of the user for the vehicle. Confirming, by one or more of said process entities, an identity of the user. Identifying, by one or more of said process entities, the preferences of the user responsive to confirming said identity of the user. Sending, by one or more of said process entities, the preferences of the user for the vehicle to electronics of the vehicle. The preferences including an assignment of control functions and associated display interface data to be rendered on display screen of a plurality of dials of a control interface of the vehicle. Each one of the plurality of dials is configured to render different display interface data based on the assignment of types of control functions selected for each of the plurality of dials. The preferences of the user are saved to memory of the vehicle for use with the user profile and saved to storage of the cloud processing service.
