A headrest assembly includes a headrest bun and first and second side supports coupled to first and second side portions of the headrest bun by first and second hinge assemblies, respectively. The first and second side supports each include respective first and second receiving wells and are operable between retracted and deployed positions relative to the headrest bun. A support member is partially received within the headrest bun and includes first and second locator pins extending outwardly from the first and second side portions of the headrest bun, respectively. The first and second locator pins are received in the first and second receiving wells when the first and second side supports are in the retracted position. The hinge assemblies each include a first pivot axis and a second pivot axis. The side support is rotatable along both the first and second pivot axes relative to the headrest bun.

A headrest assembly includes a headrest bun and first and second side supports coupled to first and second side portions of the headrest bun by first and second hinge assemblies, respectively. The first and second side supports each include respective first and second receiving wells and are operable between retracted and deployed positions relative to the headrest bun. The hinge assemblies each include a first pivot axis and a second pivot axis. The side support is rotatable along both the first and second pivot axes relative to the headrest bun.

A vehicle seat includes a seatback, a headrest and an airbag unit. The seatback has a front side and a rear side. The headrest is connected to the seatback by at least one post and is adjustable relative to the seatback in a vertical direction. The airbag unit is carried by the seatback and includes an airbag and an inflator. The airbag is rearwardly deployable from the rear side of the seatback from a stored position proximate an upper end of the seatback. The at least one post is oriented relative to the airbag unit in a position selected from a group consisting of a first position in which the at least one post includes a lower end vertically above the airbag unit with a line along an elongated axis of the at least one post intersecting the airbag unit and a second position on which the at least one post is laterally spaced from the airbag unit.

A vehicle seat includes a seatback, a headrest and an airbag unit. The seatback has a front side and a rear side. The headrest is connected to the seatback by at least one post and is adjustable relative to the seatback in a vertical direction. The airbag unit is carried by the seatback and includes an airbag and an inflator. The airbag is rearwardly deployable from the rear side of the seatback from a stored position proximate an upper end of the seatback. The at least one post is oriented relative to the airbag unit in a position selected from a group consisting of a first position in which the at least one post includes a lower end vertically above the airbag unit with a line along an elongated axis of the at least one post intersecting the airbag unit and a second position on which the at least one post is laterally spaced from the airbag unit.

An energy absorbing headrest for a vehicle includes a base member, a frame pivotally mounted to the base member, and a biasing member mounted between the base member and the frame. The biasing member provides a biasing force to the frame. A release mechanism is mounted to the base member and retains the frame against the biasing force. The release mechanism selectively releases the frame upon receipt of a release signal.

An energy absorbing headrest for a vehicle includes a base member, a frame pivotally mounted to the base member, and a biasing member mounted between the base member and the frame. The biasing member provides a biasing force to the frame. A release mechanism is mounted to the base member and retains the frame against the biasing force. The release mechanism selectively releases the frame upon receipt of a release signal.

A vehicle seat includes a seat portion and a back rest coupled to the seat portion to extend upwardly away from the seat portion. The back rest includes a base frame coupled to the seat bottom to extend upwardly therefrom and a head frame coupled to the base frame to locate the base frame between the seat portion and the head frame. The vehicle seat further includes an airbag coupled to the back rest.

A vehicle seat includes a seat portion and a back rest coupled to the seat portion to extend upwardly away from the seat portion. The back rest includes a base frame coupled to the seat bottom to extend upwardly therefrom and a head frame coupled to the base frame to locate the base frame between the seat portion and the head frame. The vehicle seat further includes an airbag coupled to the back rest.

A passenger protecting device including: an airbag device including an airbag that receives a supply of gas from an inflator and is inflated and expanded, by a front expanding portion that includes a front inflating portion to be inflated and expanded at a seat front side of the head portion and at least one of a chest portion and shoulder portions of the passenger, and a pair of left and right lateral expanding portions that include lateral inflating portions that are connected to the front expanding portion and are inflated and expanded at sides of the head portion of the passenger; and a position changing device that changes an inflated and expanded position of the airbag in a seat transverse direction, in accordance with a direction of collision of a collision body with respect to the vehicle seat.

A passenger protecting device including: an airbag device including an airbag that receives a supply of gas from an inflator and is inflated and expanded, by a front expanding portion that includes a front inflating portion to be inflated and expanded at a seat front side of the head portion and at least one of a chest portion and shoulder portions of the passenger, and a pair of left and right lateral expanding portions that include lateral inflating portions that are connected to the front expanding portion and are inflated and expanded at sides of the head portion of the passenger; and a position changing device that changes an inflated and expanded position of the airbag in a seat transverse direction, in accordance with a direction of collision of a collision body with respect to the vehicle seat.
