Embodiments include object restraint systems and methods of their operation. The system is contained in a vehicle with a passenger compartment, and includes sensor and processing subsystems, a vessel, a restraint mechanism, and an actuator. The sensor subsystem produces a sensor signal indicating a magnitude of a sensed condition, and the processing subsystem asserts an actuator signal when the sensor signal indicates that a triggering condition has occurred. The vessel is configured to hold one or more inanimate objects. For example, the vessel may include a cupholder, a lidded or open compartment, a cargo area, or another storage space that is distinct from the passenger compartment. The actuator receives the actuator signal and activates the restraint mechanism in response to assertion of the actuator signal. The restraint mechanism, when activated, is configured to retain the object(s) within the vessel and to restrict the object(s) from entering the passenger compartment.

A cup holder insert is provided that may be used whenever an undersized drink or container is placed into a cup holder and is not adequately secured. The insert is a unitary piece of material, such as plastic, having a pair of upper straps and a pair of lower wings. The insert secures itself within a cup holder by way of the expansion of the lower wings towards the inner diameter of the cup holder. A central portion of the insert spans between the upper straps and lower bands and prevents any lateral movement of the object or container placed within. The top bands are secured into a loop around the drink container by sliding one into the other and retain their shape by frictional engagement.

Cup holder assemblies and vehicles including same

Disclosed herein are assemblies for cup holders which include a cup holder body defining a receptacle, and a compressible bumper including a contact portion and a tab extending from the contact portion and through a slot formed in the cup holder body to retain the contact portion of the compressible bumper within the receptacle of the cup holder body. Further disclosed herein are assemblies for a vehicle including a center console and a cup holder assembly provided within the center console, the cup holder assembly including a cup holder body defining a receptacle, and a compressible bumper including a contact portion and a tab extending from the contact portion and through a slot formed in the cup holder body to retain the contact portion of the compressible bumper within the receptacle of the cup holder body.

Storage compartment with an elastic compartment divider

A storage compartment for installation in a motor vehicle includes a storage volume which is bounded laterally by an at least partially encircling storage wall. At least one elastic compartment divider, which has a macroscopically elastic material at least in a central region of a longitudinal extent of the compartment divider, is provided such that the compartment divider can be transferred between a first divider position and a second divider position and which, at the first divider position, divides the storage volume into a first partial compartment and a second partial compartment and, at the second divider position, forms part of the storage wall of the storage volume.
