Methods for communicating state, intent, and context of an autonomous vehicle

One variation of a method for communicating state, intent, and context of an autonomous vehicle includes: at a first time, displaying a first icon representing a current state of a vehicle on a rear-facing visual display arranged on the vehicle; navigating toward an intersection; at a second time, detecting a state of the intersection ahead of the vehicle; rendering a second icon representing the state of the intersection at the second time on the rear-facing visual display; detecting a change in the state of the intersection at a third time succeeding the second time; selecting a next navigation action for the vehicle responsive to the change in the state of the intersection at the third time; prior to executing the next navigation action, rendering a third icon representing the next navigation action on the rear-facing visual display; and autonomously executing the next navigation action.

System and method for providing a vehicle convoy status indication

A computer-implemented method and system for controlling vehicles in a vehicle convoy. The vehicles in the vehicle convoy include a following vehicle and a preceding vehicle positioned immediately ahead of the following vehicle. The method includes receiving vehicle convoy data about an environment surrounding the vehicle convoy, and detecting an intention of a remote vehicle to execute a cut-in maneuver into a path of the following vehicle. The method includes controlling a vehicle system of the following vehicle to project a status indication to a ground surface between the following vehicle and the preceding vehicle. Further, the method includes determining whether the cut-in maneuver is acceptable based on the intention of the remote vehicle and a distance between the following vehicle and the preceding vehicle, and controlling the following vehicle based on whether the cut-in maneuver is acceptable.

VEHICLE LIGHT CONTROL

A system including a computer for a vehicle is programmed to identify the vehicle as a lead vehicle in a platoon of three or more vehicles, and to identify one of the vehicles in the platoon as a caboose vehicle. The computer is programmed to deactivate a rear light of the lead vehicle, and to instruct activation of a rear light of the caboose vehicle.

A platooning light fence includes an illumination assembly having one or more light sources located on at least one of a first platooning truck and a second platooning truck, each of the one or more light sources configured to radiate a beam of light that extends substantially continuously between the first and second platooning trucks. A system for deterring passenger vehicles from entering a gap defined between at least a leading platooning truck and a trailing platooning truck includes an illumination assembly having one or more light sources located on at least one of the leading platooning truck and the trailing platooning truck, each of the one or more light sources configured to radiate a beam of light that extends substantially continuously between the leading and trailing platooning trucks, and an activation assembly configured to selectively activate the illumination assembly.

Methods to operate autonomous vehicles to pilot vehicles in groups or convoys

A method comprising accessing sensor data from one or more autonomous escort vehicles in a convoy moving along a route, detecting based on the sensor data, an environmental vehicle along or in proximity to the route of the convoy, determining based on the sensor data and movement of the convoy, that the environmental vehicle should be prevented from interfering with the movement of the convoy, identifying a particular autonomous escort vehicle that is available to modify its position to prevent the environmental vehicle from interfering with the movement of the convoy, generating instructions for the autonomous escort vehicle to modify its position to prevent the environmental vehicle from interfering with the movement of the convoy along the route, and causing the instructions to be communicated to and executed by the autonomous escort vehicle to modify its position to prevent the environmental vehicle from interfering with the movement of the convoy.

SELF-LOADING AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE

A vehicle computer includes a memory a processor programmed to execute instructions stored in the memory. The instructions include commanding a lighting system controller to flash tail lamps of a host vehicle toward a follow vehicle immediately behind the host vehicle, receiving a response from the follow vehicle, and commanding the host vehicle to autonomously proceed to a loading area upon receipt of the response from the follow vehicle.

VEHICLE ILLUMINATION DEVICE, VEHICLE AND ILLUMINATION CONTROL SYSTEM

An illumination device provided in a vehicle capable of traveling in an automatic driving mode is provided with: an illumination unit configured so that light is emitted toward the outside of the vehicle; and an illumination control unit configured so that, on the basis of an illumination control signal transmitted from another vehicle capable of traveling in an automatic driving mode and provided with an illumination unit, the illumination state of the illumination unit corresponds to the illumination state of the illumination unit.

VEHICLE ILLUMINATION DEVICE, VEHICLE AND ILLUMINATION CONTROL SYSTEM

An illumination device installed in a vehicle capable of traveling in an automatic driving mode is provided with an illumination unit configured so as to radiate light outward from the vehicle, and an illumination control unit configured so as to control the illumination unit, on the basis of an illumination control signal sent from transportation infrastructure, which is provided with a light-emitting body for radiating light outward, in order to make the illumination state of the illumination unit correspond to the illumination state of the light-emitting body.

INFORMATION DISPLAY DEVICE AND INFORMATION DISPLAY METHOD

A vehicle state determining unit (1) for determining a state of a vehicle and a display data selecting unit (5) for selecting display data corresponding to the state of the vehicle determined by the vehicle state determining unit (1) out of a plurality of display data for displaying information presented to the outside of the vehicle are provided, and an information displaying unit (8) is configured to display the information to the outside of the vehicle in accordance with the display data selected by the display data selecting unit (5). As a result, it is possible to select and display information contributing to driving safety.
