A vehicle steering wheel is provided that includes a rotatable rim comprising a core structure, a steering angle sensor sensing an angle of rotation of the rim, and a plurality of proximity sensors located on the rim and spaced apart from one another along an arc length. The vehicle steering wheel also includes a controller processing sensed outputs generated by each of the plurality of proximity sensors and determining operator input commands based on the sensed outputs. The controller assigns a function to each of the proximity sensors that changes as the rim is rotated at an angle such that a given function associated with a proximity sensor remains at the same position in space.

The hooks are positioned on the frame such that the frame is couplable to the wheel. The opposing side edges of the frame abut the opposing sides of the wheel to stabilize the frame. The tray is hingedly coupled to the frame such that the tray is positionable transverse from the frame for use. The tray also is positionable substantially parallel to the frame for storage.

Optionally, a camera integrated to the mount such that the field of view (FOV) of the camera is preserved over a desired scene even as the position of the mobile device is changed and/or the vehicle performs various maneuvers. In some, embodiments an integrated apparatus may be mounted to a rearview mirror of a vehicle.

The controls maybe arranged in a cluster on one or both sides of the upper half of the steering wheel. The controls can be located in areas of the steering wheel including the spokes, the rim or a special flange extended from the rim or the spoke of the steering wheel and are easily recognizable and accessible by the driver while the driver is looking ahead from a normal driving position with the driver's eyes focused on the road and maintaining the driver's hands on the steering wheel. The controls can be further enhanced by varied coloring, shape, size, and texture to make them easily identifiable. The controls can be used to access and control vehicle systems or portable telematics devices in multi modal process in conjunction with thumb gesture interpretation or speech recognition. A further enhancement to the system is the introduction of a universal portable devices docking station to eliminate falling devices and the consequences of accident.
