A method includes obtaining one or more images of a segment of a route from a camera while a vehicle is moving along the route. The segment of the route includes one or more guide lanes. The method also includes comparing, with one or more computer processors, the one or more images of the segment of the route with a benchmark visual profile of the route based at least in part on an overlay of the one or more images onto the benchmark visual profile or an overlay of the benchmark visual profile onto the one or more images. The one or more processors identify a misaligned segment of the route based on one or more differences between the one or more images and the benchmark visual profile and respond to the identification of the misaligned segment of the route by modifying an operating parameter of the vehicle.

Systems for protecting a work train using an ultra-wideband (UWB) ranging system are disclosed. Aspects include a plurality of UWB wayside beacons disposed along a track, each of the plurality of UWB beacons configured to broadcast a unique beacon identification number. Aspects also include an onboard UWB control system disposed on a work train, the onboard UWB control system having a processing system in communication with radio-frequency communication device and an onboard UWB beacon. The onboard UWB beacon is configured to receive the unique beacon identification number from at least one of the plurality of UWB wayside beacons. The processing system is configured to determine a position of the work train on the track based upon known locations of the plurality of UWB wayside beacons, to transmit this position to a wayside Zone Controller, and to enforce a movement authority limit provided by the wayside zone controller.

VEHICLE CONTROL SYSTEM AND METHOD

A vehicle control system includes a controller to receive a current commanded speed, determine a current moving speed, and calculate a reference shaped speed to operate a propulsion system and/or a brake system to cause the current moving speed to approach the current commanded speed. The reference speed is based on a reference shaping model that changes the reference speed based on relative values of the current commanded speed, a previous commanded speed, the current moving speed, and a previous reference shaped speed. The controller controls the propulsion system and/or the brake system to cause the vehicle system to move at the calculated reference shaped speed. A method includes receiving a current commanded speed, determining a current moving speed, calculating a reference shaped speed, and controlling the one or more of the propulsion system or the brake system to cause the vehicle system to move at the reference shaped speed.
