A method of generating an overhead view of a tow vehicle and a trailer attached to the tow vehicle is provided. The method includes receiving first sensor system data from a sensor system and determining a trailer width based on the first sensor system data. The method includes receiving a second sensor system data from the sensor system and determining a trailer length based on the sensor system data. The method includes determining a separation distance between the trailer and the vehicle based on the first and/or second sensor system data. The method includes generating an overhead image including a vehicle representation and a trailer representation based on the trailer width, the trailer length, the separation distance, the vehicle length, and the vehicle width. The method also includes transmitting instructions to display the overhead image.

A parking assistance device includes an imager that captures an image of a surrounding of a vehicle, and a display that displays a guidance image for guiding the vehicle from a parking start position to a target parking position and displays a moving area in which the vehicle can move during a parking operation. An area and dimension of the moving area displayed on the display changes based on a change in a steering angle of the vehicle.

A hitch assist system is provided herein. The hitch assist system includes an imager for capturing one or more images of a hitch assembly and a trailer coupler. The imager is operably coupled with a movable panel. The hitch assembly includes a ball mount and a hitch ball. A controller is configured to generate an image that includes the hitch assembly, identify the hitch assembly within the image, estimate a ball mount length based on a predefined reference length and/or estimate a hitch ball height.

A hitch assist system is provided herein that includes a sensing system configured to detect a trailer and obstacles proximate the trailer. The hitch assist system also includes a controller in communication with the sensing system and configured to define a final vehicle heading direction relative to the trailer when a hitch ball of a vehicle is aligned with a coupler of the trailer; determine an uppermost/farthest position of the vehicle from the trailer; determine a lowermost/nearest position of the vehicle from the trailer; and determine a vehicle path that aligns the vehicle within the uppermost/farthest and lowermost/nearest positions.
