VEHICLE-TRAILER BACKING SYSTEM WITH AUTOMATIC TRAILER RECOGNITION AND STORAGE

A method of controlling a backing system for a vehicle and trailer assembly includes: initiating a backing system mode; recording at least one image of a trailer for the vehicle and trailer assembly with a camera mounted to the vehicle; identifying a current plurality of features of the trailer in the image; learning a current plurality of distances associated with the current plurality of features. Then comparing the current plurality of features and distances with stored plurality of features of distances to determine if there is a match. If there is not a match a current calibration of a plurality of relative distances associated with the plurality of reference features is learned while the driver performs a number of preset calibration maneuvers. A relative position between the vehicle and the trailer is determined using the stored calibration and the current plurality of features and current plurality of relative distance.

FIFTH WHEEL TO GOOSENECK TORSION SUSPENSION COUPLER
20190031255 · 2019-01-31 ·

A torsion gooseneck coupler has a pin box that is designed to be affixed to an existing trailer. The pin box has a pin box torsion end and a lower assembly that each have a corresponding torsion bar. The torsion bars extend outwardly where each affixes to a corresponding torsion arm. The lower assembly is designed to affix to a towing vehicle. The lower assembly has an upper and a lower torsion tube that each has a corresponding torsion bar. The upper torsion arm affixes the upper torsion bar of the pin box assembly to the upper torsion bar of the lower assembly. Correspondingly, a lower torsion arm affixes the lower torsion bars of the pin box assembly to the lower assembly. The torsion tubes and bars resist rotation and cooperate to allow limited movement and provide resistance to forces along the axes of the upper and lower assemblies.

UTILITY ARMS FOR EXTENSION FROM A FIFTH WHEEL KINGPIN AND RELATED METHODS

Utility arm apparatuses for securement to a kingpin of a fifth wheel coupling of a trailer and related methods are provided herein. A utility arm apparatus can include an elongate body having an attachment end and a utility end. The attachment end can include a recessed portion for receiving a neck portion of a kingpin of a fifth wheel coupling secured to the trailer such that the utility end extends outward from the kingpin past an end of the trailer. The utility arm apparatus can further include a utility device secured to the utility end of the elongate body such that the utility device is positioned past the end of the trailer when the attachment end of the elongate body is secured to the kingpin.

System and method for preventing contact between a truck cab and a fifth wheel trailer

A system according to the present disclosure includes a trailer distance module, a trailer contact module, a trailer distance module, and at least one of a driver warning module, a brake control module, and a steering control module. The trailer distance module determines a distance from a cab of a truck to a fifth wheel trailer attached to the truck based on an input from a sensor. The trailer contact module identifies potential contact between the trailer and the truck cab based on the cab-to-trailer distance. The driver warning module warns a driver of the potential contact. The brake control module applies a brake of at least one of the truck and the trailer when potential contact is identified. The steering control module increases an amount of driver effort required to steer the truck in at least one direction when potential contact is identified.

Angle and orientation measurements for vehicles with multiple drivable sections

Techniques are described for measuring angle and/or orientation of a rear drivable section (e.g., a trailer unit of a semi-trailer truck) relative to a front drivable section (e.g., a tractor unit of the semi-trailer truck) using an example rotary encoder assembly. The example rotary encoder assembly comprises a base surface; a housing that includes a second end that is connected to the base surface and a first end that is at least partially open and is coupled to a housing cap; and a rotary encoder that is located in the housing in between the base surface and the housing cap, where the rotary encoder includes a rotatable shaft that protrudes from a first hole located in the housing cap, and where a top of the rotatable shaft located away from the rotary encoder is coupled to magnet(s).

PORTABLE TRAILER STABILIZERS

A terminal tractor, comprising: (a) an operator cab. (b) a fifth wheel configured for repositioning trailers, and (c) a trailer stabilizer lift separate from the fifth wheel.

Fifth wheel release arrangement
12110070 · 2024-10-08 · ·

A fifth wheel release arrangement for releasing a trailer from a towing vehicle in response to a trigger signal. The arrangement comprises one or more externally threaded fasteners and one or more pinion nuts comprising internal threads for engaging the external threads on the threaded fasteners, thereby holding the fifth wheel in position with respect to a first bracket attached to a towing vehicle frame, wherein the externally threaded fasteners are arranged to be rotationally fixed when received by the pinion nuts. The pinion nuts further comprise external teeth for engaging a toothed rack, and the rack is movable by an actuator system, in response to the trigger signal, in a direction to rotate the pinion nuts, whereby the externally threaded fasteners are ejected from the pinion nuts upon moving the rack by the actuator system in the direction, thereby releasing the trailer from the towing vehicle.

PIN BOX ASSEMBLY WITH GOOSENECK COUPLER
20180215217 · 2018-08-02 ·

A pin box assembly with gooseneck coupler for coupling a towed vehicle to a towing vehicle is described. The pin box assembly may include a first member capable of being secured to a towed vehicle and a second member pivotally coupled to the first member about an axis of rotation relative to the first member. The pin box assembly may further include a gooseneck ball coupler coupled to the second member, and a suspension system coupled to at least one of the first and second members, the suspension system damping motion between the first and second members.

METHOD FOR STABILIZING A TRACTOR VEHICLE-TRAILER COMBINATION DURING TRAVEL
20180154888 · 2018-06-07 ·

A method and device for stabilizing a tractor vehicle-trailer combination during travel, in which tractor vehicle and trailer are connected via at least one pivot joint, including: ascertaining a setpoint buckling angle for a driving-stable setpoint movement of the combination, and/or a setpoint buckling angle velocity for a driving-stable setpoint movement of the combination, between the combination or between two trailers; ascertaining an actual buckling angle for the effective actual movement of the combination, and/or an actual buckling angle velocity for the effective actual movement of the combination, between the tractor vehicle and trailer or between multiple trailers; ascertaining a deviation between the setpoint and actual buckling angles and/or between the setpoint and actual buckling angle velocities, and if the deviation exceeds a threshold value, generating a control signal to activate at least one vehicle component to control movement of the combination in a direction toward a driving-stable movement state.
